Question Are you a software tester or involved in software testing?

Currently I’m a technical team leader for a large outsourcing company. One of the projects I worked on I got involved in User Acceptance Testing. This made me think that testing is the field that I want to get into. So after some persuading I managed to get my company to pay for my ISEB Foundation Certificate in Software Testing. But looking at testing roles on various job sites the majority of them are asking for experience in Test Director or Mercury Quality Centre.

My question is, does anyone know where to get trail versions of the above mentioned software or know of any CBTs where I can teach myself the basics?

Interesting job ambition! I would have thought you would have progressed from the technical team leader role into something like project management or something.

What makes you want to go into testing (if you dont mind me asking, unless you just like it of course).

I was contemplating project management as i've done a bit of project management. But after doing software testing I realised this is the field for me. I really enjoyed the technical aspects of testing and for the 1st time I actually enjoyed studying while doing my ISEB certificate. Hopefully if I do get into testing I would want to become a test lead/manager.

I would go for more than just the ISEB Foundation cert to be honest. See if you can get them to fund a Practitioner exam and the world will become your oyster.

Mercury seem to have pulled free downloads of the trial so I would have a root round the torrents maybe???

I did testing systems and insurance products for a few years and although I did enjoy it and it has really helped my career it can be piss boring after a time. I did testing and other things which wasn't too bad as the changing in type of work mafde it bareable.

My advice if you want to do testing is become a contract tester, that way you don't test the same thing over and over and over and it's better paid than permanent work. There is a certain skill to testing (well, methodology rather than skill) but you have to be observant and mathmetical at times. All depends on what your testing.

Agree with Mr J on this as used to work with the cunt!! Vast majority was in house UAT but can also involve some road trips (once did Newcastle, Birmingham, Stockport, Southampton and Worcester in a 2-3 week window) which is handy for expenses and over-time

So in relation to my Post in this section, is anyone interested in becoming a tester? I have 1 or 2 London roles on offer and 1 Swedish role...

I'm desperate to fill these positions. I'm actually progressing to QA & Project leader and the company is expanding hence the requirement of additional testers.
