Gamecube game - memory card problem

I've just downloaded the gamecube game Fire Emblem Path Of Radience, works fine.
However the game won't let me save on my memory card, It's not an official nintendo memory card if that matters, but that never caused any problem on the gamecube.

What's the problem?

I don't post before trying somthing as obvious as trying both card slots.

The error says "wrong device in slot A, put in memory card"

some people aren't that clever, you have to suggest the obvious other option just in case

It might not be compatible, one of my sd style memory cards for the gamecube didn't work in my wii

My friend will lend me the orginal gamecube game so I can play it on my gamecube.
I believe the problem was the non official memory card though.
