Default Help required - shortcut problem

    Hi,

Not often I ask for help, but this has me stumped. Google is not helping so if anyone fancies a challenge then here the gauntlet is laid.

I`ve got a PC and the only thing wrong with it is that IE is creating a shortcut to itself when double clicked upon.

The link is on the desktop and double click and hey presto, new IE shortcut.

I really want to avois a reinstall for something so trivial so any advice welcome.

    Thanks

    Pete

If you right click the icon in properties what does the "Target" state?

Only thing i can think off is that for some reason the association has changed and by defaults it creates a shortcut instead of an open command. Im looking into it now for you pal. Also what does the target say?

    try this mate

    Start] [Run] [Regedit]
    Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: DWORD // Value Name: NoInternetIcon
    Setting for Value Data: [0 = Disabled / 1 = Enabled]
    Exit Registry and Reboot

To avoid the inherent danger of editing the registry, the same results may be obtained by using the procedure detailed below.

Right click on any open area of the Desktop
Click [Properties], select the [Desktop] tab, then click [Customize Desktop] button
    Select the [General] tab
In the [Desktop Icons] section place or remove the checkmark next to Internet Explorer

then do it again to make it come back

Just delete the icon from the desktop, and create a new shotcut? Or use Opera

Yeah well you can get rid of the desktop icon under customize desktop and then untick internet explorer. That should add and remove the correct icon in case the one you are using is rubbish.
I dont have desktop shortcuts the quick launch ones work quicker.

Coley, thats what I did. The IE icon is the system icon, not a shortcut. Therefore there is no target when you right click...properties go staright to Internet Options.

Cant dump IE as the customer uses it...plus, its not very professional from our point of view.

That reg fix didnt do anything...bah!

    Any other ideas chappies?

edit: by the way, when you right click the icon, there is no OPEN command.

If you right-click on your desktop, go to Properties, then the Desktop tab, there's a "Customize Desktop" button down near the bottom. Untick Internet Explorer, click OK, then Apply, then click into Customize Desktop again and re-enable Internet Explorer. That's the way to get the "official" shortcut on the desktop, without the little arrow and such.

(As inspectercoley said... You tried this one yet mate?)

You can try "uninstalling" and reinstalling internet explorer.
Even though this normally does nothing and doesn't really uninstall explorer it kinda pretends to it might fix things.

    Goto add/remove progs.
Then on the side there is add/remove windows components.
In that menu untick internet explorer and then finish.
Than do the same and retick it and then finish.

    This might fix it.

If not then probably remove the desktop one and then create your own shortcut to internet explorer if that will work?

    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

If this is only a recent problem then use system restore. I always use this if i install a virus or something goes wrong. Take the comp back to when you know it was working if you do know and it doesn't delete any files.

Also try to see if the same thing happens if you login as another user. If not then that user account might be fooked. If so then try migrating everything to a new user account and then rename it to look like the old one.
(Be careful to copy across all favourites and docs as well as it is easy to miss stuff when you try to do this)

Also dunno if you tried any of this or not (first thing that comes up in google):

    http://help.wugnet.com/windows2/desk...ict487381.html

You need to change the File association to Open instead of Copy, to that you
need to open the Windows Explorer then click Tools >> Folder Options >> File
Type and there select HTML and click on Advanced Button, make sure under
    Actions:
    Open is the default Actions.
