I would start with giving your brother a good beating other than that I can't help.

in the event that u cant repair the OS (which you should be able to do by booting off the xp disc and trying a repair via the recovery console http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058 ), dont worry about the pics.. as long as u dont do a full format, most of it should be easily recoverable by sticking the hd in another machine as a secondary drive.

moral of the story, always back up yer important pics/docs.

Personally, I`d whap the HDD out...borrow a mates PC...plug it into that...retrieve your data...now try to fix it.

As Marcode said, try a repair. You prolly wont find the recovery console any good but if you just boot from the XP disk, press enter first, then F8...now if it finds your windows it will now offer you the choice to repair...do this. Bear in mind however you will need your PRODUCT KEY. This should be on your case if genuine, or...well...I`ll leave you to figure it out

I would do as Pete said, first get the hdd out, backup all data, then if you want to, see if you can recover, but why not just use this as an excuse to wipe your machine and start it fresh again.

If product key is a problem, go to the ng's or bittorrent, download xp corporate edition, then find the keygen and crack (I think the crack has been posted on df and was called wgablinder or something). Will run fine without the crack, except you won't be able to use windows update.

yup, as said above, but I'll just add that when you get into the recovery console, try the "FIXMBR", and "FIXBOOT" commands.

They fix the master boot record, and the boot record (they are what tell the PC how to boot into XP).

Want you need is another hard drive to load XP on, make this your master drive and make your original one slave , load windows, the original drive will be d drive search your drive for the pictures and burn them to cd or dvd or copy them to your now c drive, reverse the process , and keep people away from your pc that don’t respect it .

Lets complicate matters is it. Often there are ways to fix problems without spending unnessecary cash. Admittedly this would be an option, but not one I would consider first and foremost.

I manage a PC shop, so I spend every waking hour fixing PC`s.

I`d at least try to resolve it cheaply before selling the customer a new HDD + reinstall cost.

Try pressing F8 as soon as your boot screen comes on and see if you can get in to safe mode, less complicated

Turns out it was a cheap option after all.
Must admit its what i would do as well, but who says you are going to sell the customer a new HDD, as we all got loads kicking round the workshop anyway. Its just an in /Install OS/recover/image/out with the temp.and jobs done.

either your master boot record is corrupt, fix this by booting via xp cd, go into recovery mode and type fixboot or fixmbr

the other thing maybe he has deleted your xp partition

also give him a slap and tell him next time use a livecd for ubuntu
