Question Ubuntu - How to play DVD's?

OK, i've installed Ubuntu Ultimate edition on my laptop and everything works fine apart from playing DVD's. No matter what I try i can't get a DVD to play as i don't have the right codec. I've installed every codec out there but no joy.

Is there something obvious that i'm missing that you need to do to get it to work?

And the first person to tell me to get VLC gets a slap

So what are you using? MPlayer should work.

You just goto the add components / software bit (repository I think its called) and then choose the dvd option. should download and then update for you.

    Or use this link:

I'll give it a go. I'm using Mplayer to play the DVD but it just won't pay.

i assume you used feisty fawn (ubuntu 7.04):
you need to add the following lines to /etc/apt/sources.list file

    gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

enter these two lines and save your file

    deb http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/ feisty free non-free
    deb-src http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/ feisty free non-free

Now you need to copy the key using the following command in terminal:

    wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- ¦ sudo apt-key add -

Update the source list using the following command

    sudo apt-get update

Install Codecs using the following command

    sudo apt-get install w32codecs libdvdcss2

Using above download locations you can install most of the mutimedia codecs for ubuntu.

    sudo apt-get update

thats exactly what i did to get it working on ubuntu 7.10

the reason its such a cunt to get stuff like that working in ubuntu is that they have a policy to not support anything that isnt open. which is a fantastic policy cos it means we can get rid of all the total shit like the mp3 format and encrypted dvds, but its also very annoying if you have a collection of dvds and mp3s to play. unfortunately it seems impossible to finally stamp out these crappy formats because so many people support them that the people who dont want to have to go to all this hassle to support them

the ubuntu-restricted-extras package is a good one to add too. it doesnt actually have anything in it but it depends on all the stuff that ubuntu doesnt come with, like mp3 support, so when the dependecies are resolved it all gets installed. absolutely magic

and to the people who said to go back to windows. trust me, once you have ubunutu running properly it will never break again and you'll never see an random error like you do on windows. then get all your windows mates round and do the desktop cube with compiz and they'll be converted too

Out of interest any reason you went with Ubuntu Ultimate?

On any fresh install of Ubuntu i always visit the following site

Download the install.sh to my desktop. Bring up the terminal and type the following

    cd Desktop
    sudo sh install.sh

Then follow through all the prompts.

This add's sources to your sources.list (repositories), installs just about every codec you could shake a stick at and some other good apps:

    RealPlayer
    Acroread
    Thunderbird
    Wine
    VirtualBox
