Hmm decided against it as the reviews so far suggest this is not ideal for macro.
It was going for £155

Should go for a dedicated one if that is what you want.
Looks like your after a Macro lens DB, same as me lol. Seems like we are matched, both got a 400D and want a good Macro lens lol!
If you find anything good, give me a PM!

Will do mate

I'm number 3... 400D and in want of a good Macro Lens.
However I'll be getting the Sigma 105 EX. Probably around March time.
as ive said before, this seems to be your cheapest real macro lens

Im sure I saw it for 199 somewhere else.
If your not willing to spend that, then macro tubes are probably your best option, the macro end of a normal zoom lens is useless.
Nothing to add sorry Dappa.
I've got that sigma 17-70 and use it as my walk around lens instead of the 18-55mm kit. It's a reall great lens but not a true macro lens in my opinion.
The sigma 105mm on the other hand is a great macro, i have this too but just haven't got round to using it much unfortunately.

Just to add my two penny worth - The Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro Lens - is suppose to be very good - £200 shipped from Hong kong...
Look here sample loads of shots....

I just bought this lens, haven't had a chance to try it yet, but the build quality looks excellent. I read alot about it before I bought it, and it looks like a great lens, another good one is the tamron 18-55 but I wanted the extra length.
Ideally if you want to enter the world of macro, you need a dedicated macro lens, the ones that say macro, ie. the lens in question will have a lower image ratio. 1:2.3 where as the Sigma 105mm Macro is 1:1. The closet focal distance is greater with the 105mm but the focal length is longer so there won't be much noticeable difference except reduced shadow cast with this lens.
For those that don't know the image ratio refers to the image size on the sensor. a 1:1 ratio will show greater details that 1:2.3. Hope that makes sense. But you can get greater ratio with the use of extension tubes, but most will render the use of AF defunkt. So it's back to manual focus, which ain't a bad thing in macro photography.
I have played with both dedicated macro and lenses with macro function and you can really notice the difference between the two, hence I am trying to sell my 350D to get the Sigma 105mm macro lens...
