(Vista) Can only see 1 USB HD at a time...

OK I have a Dell Laptop, newish, decent spec with Vista Home premium and the latest updates (All legit)...

I have a problem where I can only plug in 1 USB device at a time... IT has 4 USB sockets but when I have 1 HD plugged it, it fails to see the 2nd when plugged in...

Same goes for plugging in a Printer with another USB device or a USB DVD Drive when another USB device is plugged in...

Any ideas? It's annoying as the drive is only 120gb and I need to copy files between to USB devices, however with my current issue it is impossible!

Friend has got this exact problem on a laptop as well. I am going aroudn tonight. He has bought the PC new (not known where form yet) and the hop are insisting it was his doing.

Other issues as well. I have never even been on a Vista machine yet, so nto sure how i will fare.

If i figure it out then I will etl you know. BUt it is worrying there is someone else with the same problem and as yet no answer.

Cheers, I have not looked into it too much yet, I do have the Dell support software installed (for what it's worth....) Just not had a chance to get round and resolve it..

Are you getting any error messages when trying to plug in a second device?

While using multiple devices Is there any presence of them in device manager or disk management??

I think I get the good old "usb device not recognized" but when only 1 is plugged in it sees the device fine...

So to re-iterate. I plug 1 Device in and it's fine. I plug the 2nd in and I get the "usb device not recognized message".
If I unplug them both and then plug the 2nd one in it works fine, plug the first one back in and get "usb device not recognized" again! Why have 4 USB ports if it can't handle more than 1 device at a time?

im guessing it could be a lock down.. a registry setting maybe.. no reason why they should not work with more than 1 hdd etc, could also be a usb1.1 port and the other a usb 2.0 port..

Tried all 4 port combinations. I'm taking it the back two will be USB 2.0 and side 1.0?

Sorry goldberg, it turned out this guys machine was not plugged in properly (connections on MOBO)

It was not the same as yours (great communication) it was the fact only ONE worked (he bloody did say one at a time, but he meant one device at a time due to the fact only one USB worked)

He needs to send it back anyway, the 6 on the back only one works but now the front panel is plugged in all 4 or those work.

No probs, I took the HD's into work and sorted what I needed to for the time been. I'm busy with other shit at he moment to be too worried but I will try over the next week.
