    Help Wireless help!

Right, my mate had a NETGEAR WG311v3 wireless card in his old PC. He got a newish PC with better specs and decided to put the wireless card into the new PC....

However, now it will see and connect to the router, but the internet wont work! It works fine with my laptop and my other mates laptop, but not the desktop/NETGEAR card!

I have re-installed XP a couple of time with no joy. Then I found the latest drivers on the NETGEAR site. When I try to install them it says they have been installed fine, but when I check the driver version it says 2005! Even tho the new drivers were made in 2007!!

I have completely removed the old drivers and installed from scratch with the new ones, but it still says the old ones are installed!

I even gave him a static IP address to no avail!

Im kinda out of ideas now...it worked fine in his old PC, but not this one!

He's running XP Pro SP2 on both machines...

    Any idea??

    cheers!

can you connect to the router with any other wireless devices?
Check the wireless isolation settings on the router?

Also check the NAT settings on the router, tho if it works for wired users this should not be the problem, but if its not ticked tick it.

What software does the new pc have for antivirus etc? try disabling this and see if it will connect.

Try to ping things with cmd as well.
    try ping www.google.com

If he has Mcaffe I reckon that could be a problem, I have helped two separate people now, similar problem to yours, after hours of troubleshooting removing mcaffe and installing NOD32 sorted it all!

Yes, my laptop and my other mates laptop can connect via wireless and via ethernet just fine, so I dont think its the router. He has AVG anti-virus (used to have McAfee, but I installed AVG after formatting). Disabling it makes no difference, and I have it on my lappy, along with ZoneAlarm, and mine works fine.

When I try to ping any site, it sometimes get one reply and the rest time out, but most of the time they all time out.

He used to have McAfee, but I installed AVG instead of it when I reformatted, and even when I disable it the problem still persists!

Just did that, and it made no difference what-so-ever.

yes, it has an IP address (I have assigned it a static one, but it hasnt made any real difference), it says its connected at a speed of 18Mbps with a Low signal strength.

I dont think the "Low Signal Strength" is a problem, because it sometimes said that when the card was in the old PC and it worked fine. Mine has said it a few times in numerous different places and it worked fine! My laptop even said it has no signal when I was in the library the other day, but it still worked just fine!

The PC is in the room directly above the router, so its not too far away.

And it is kind of working, but VERY slow!

Right now its downloading an update for AVG, the update is only about 300KB, and AVG is reporting that it is downloading at approx 300b/s and it will take 20 mins to download!

But website still dont show on any web browser, they just time out and nothing at all shows apart from the "This page could not be displayed" error.

does anyone know where I can get the NETGEAR drivers? I mean JUST the drivers. Cos I have a funny feeling that its netgears bloody network manager thats screwing things up! And you can't install the drivers without installing the network manager using the packages from their site!

EDIT: Never mind! I found them on the MARVEL website (the manufacturer of the chipset used in this wireless card) via google!

Will install them now and report back! Wish me luck!

what does it say when you do ipconfig /all in the cmd window?

Also what is your signal strength when connected?

You can get the drivers from the netgear website but it installs their software as well, would try that at first rather than just the drivers cos it might help, then once setup you can get rid of their software if you don't like it.

    http://www.netgear.co.uk/product_support.php

If it is the neighbors screwing yours up just change the channel on your router to the furthest away from there's that you can. So if he has ch1 or ch12 then choose 6 or 7. Or if he has 8 then choose ch 2 or something...

If not mate I was fixing someones wireless last night who use netgear router and dongle, you can install the network manager to have the drivers, then click the windows wireless logo in the systray and it will say another app is doing the wireless work. On the left click advanced settings, wireless tab, then check the 'use windows zero' blah blah

That will get windows to look after the wireless connections. Surprisingly I have found windows zero to be better than most other third party apps! Beats netgear and belkin anyway.

Yeah my netgear one used to always crash cos I had dual core processor. Bless it. I could get it to work if i ran it and then quickly set the affinity to one processor tho. Silly cunts.

right, well I have now removed ALL the crappy NETGEAR software, and just used the Windows Wireless Manager along with the Marvell drivers and guess what....IT WORKS!!!

Turned out to be the NETGEAR software all along! And I had already tried using the Windows Wireless Manager with their drivers and it wouldn't work!

So from this I can conclude that NETGEAR make good hardware (never had a fault with them, unlike anothe major wireless brand I have used), however they make crappy drivers/software!

Agreed, their software for their wireless is very iffy.
They make good software/firmware for their routers tho, it has to be said.
