Stuck at 640x480 after formatting PC

Hi fellas.

Have just took the gamble and formatted the hard drive on my old Dell Dimension 3000, with Windows XP. All went went well until it was finally completed.

I find myself unable to select any resolution other than 640x480 16bit. (whic as u can imagine is impossible to work with). All the solutions and remedies that I can find on the internet and in the documentation tell me to go into display>>settings>>advanced>>monitor>>properties.

Problem is I cannot click on the properties button as it is greyed out and so cannot install the drivers (if that's the problem) for my monitor (which incidentally is a Dell E173 FP). Anyone have any idea why this may be.

Also I cannot find any hint of a monitor in Device manager.


Please please please someone help me as I'm dead if ive screwed (what is now) the kid's PC up

mule has hit the nail sqaure on the head there m8.......

identify your gfx card and get the drivers you need..

1...your gonna have either a GeForce card 4,5,6,7,8 then get Nvidia drivers

2...or its an ATI, then its catalyst drivers

3...;lif you plug your monitor in near the usb or comm port its likely onboard SIS
but if you plug it in further down the case then its option 1 or 2 and you are gonna
have to take the side off to identify it..

if your still struggling dont hesitate to ask further...

Apologies for being a complete nooB. You'd think with an old an like Shambles I'd know this kinds stuff.

Look at the back of your pc for the service tag number - mine is JGVBT0J and is on a sticker with a barcode and another smaller number on the fan area.

Then you enter that number in after clicking on the service tage section in the middle of this page.

That should automatically bring up the correct drivers for your pc.

Edit: I wouldn't be surprised if Mule's link brings you a slightly more up to date driver, but it's still worth going to the page I linked to make sure you have all the rest for your pc.

Use the Intel® Chipset Identification Utility to find out what chipset it is. Then you can get the driver from here.

mule and carlover have it in the bag for you...

dell give out an id number with all pcs,,,,go to there website and navigate to the part where you enter you own personal id number and all the drivers for your PC are in one place..
