    so am i right in thinking you need to take about 5 shots of the same thing to do a HDR image?

    No mate you can do it with one shot.

    This is how i do it using photoshop CS3.

    Take your chosen shot and save it as shot0, then goto image/adjustments/exposure and set exposure to 2.00, save as shot+2, then again goto images/adjustments/exposure and change it to -4. save as shot-2. so you end up with 3 shots with exposures of -2, 0, +2. These images will be used via photomatix for your HDR shot.
