Default XP: Password required at logon screen.

    Hi all,

I recently wiped a friend's pc and reinstalled XP for him. He used the PC that night and everything was fine. A few days later he tried to logon and was asked for a password! I have assured him that I didn't set any password for account logon. I am sure that I have heard of this happening before, phantom password protection on XP accounts but I can't seem to find any info on it at the moment. Anyone have any experience of this? Is there any way/or software available, to sort this out?

    cheers

Can he get in without a password?
Did you set an administrator password?
If you can get in type 'control userpasswords2' in the run box and turn off the users must enter a password bit.

I have only spoken over the phone and it seems that he cannot get in at all. I was wondering if you can add new users to the PC if you can get in via safe mode?

No, I didn't set any passwords at all, never do.

Do you think that the 'control userpasswords2' command can be run in safe mode?

Is it a NT looking logon screen? Someone who I helped the other day was running XP, I didn't change any logon details but when I rebooted a NT style screen had a strange username in it and asked for a password. It didn't lookel ike the home edition of XP standard logon screen. I just clicked ok with no pass entered and it worked, maybe that will help you?

get a linux boot cd, get the password hash and then use rainbow tables to reverse lookup the password (or try brute forcing)

if it was working fine when you gave it to him back then was it not his fault that there is now a password on it ?

I'm not sure if it's the same one, but I have lophcrack or something like that - based on slax I think(The disk is at work so I can't check) - as far as I' m aware it opens a terminal window on the desktop and tells you it is starting, and to press a key to close.

I have tried it on my machine and it gets the passwords ok.

A friend of mine managed to lock their Vista account out by forgetting their password and I used this simple tool (need to make a bootable floppy / CD / USB stick) to unlock and reset their password:

Offline NT password & registry editor

Works a treat on XP too, of course!
