Tech Hands-on with the Nikon D60 DSLR

It seems like big boys Nikon and Canon DSLRs have been slugging it out since, well, before the "D" was even a thought. This year, it's a fight over the entry-level end of the DSLR market with the Nikon's D60 facing off against Canon's EOS Rebel XSi. On paper at least, Nikon's offering is little changed from from the D40x: 10.2-megapixel CCD, 3-fps shooting, sensor dust reduction, and of course, Eye-Fi enhancements. Of course, the real tale is in the images, so we'll hold judgement until we see the results of the EXPEED image processing concept.

dunno if it's true or not but, looking at the d40 and then the d40x and seeing the minimal difference between the two (6 mp and 10.2) and then this d60, is there any room left to progress? it seems like they're all adding the smallest off details to sell more cameras.

I have stolen money from a DF member and a member of Disqworld. All my personal details including families details are on file and will be made public to everyone if I do not refund the money I stole or send the goods I promised. My name will be ravaged across the net and the consequences will be severe if I do not sort this fucking mess out.

Id hope for a proper auto focus, i cant believe they didnt add that with the X.
The 40x was only introduced to combat the canon 400D, or it may have been the other way around, punters in general think more megapixels = better photos, so they were both racing to have an entry level 10mpx model on the market.

Its worth taking into account that the D60 isnt probably meant to be an upgrade to the 40 though, more of a replacement so as it is, spec difference will be minor, if you want more features, spend more money is the usual rule.

Just ordered one of these with VR as part of my insurance replacement deal. I'm a total beginner with DSLR but I hear that the nikon can use just about any Nikon lens ever made which sounds good. This true?
    Any more tips?

As long as your not buying lenses a trillion year old they should fit, the odd older one may have issues but unless your scouring for obscure stuff on ebay you shouldn't have a problem.
If you are new to DSLR photography, just wait till u get the camera and play with it, read the manual and take loads of photos, then decide if you would want a longer zoom range etc.

Found out that some Nikons can only use the AF function on Nikon lenses .

thats because there isn't a motor in the camera body isn't it? Some lenses have a motor inside to do the same job. I thought that was just on the D40/x though.

Yeah there is no motor in the body which has disappointed a lot of users when they have bought lenses without the function on board. Seems odd to me but that is the score I believe.

Read up on this and to get motorised AF it needs to be an AF-S lens - otherwise manual focus but all other features work.
I always thought the point of DSLR anyway was to focus manually. Or am I missing something.

I'd be lost without autofocus on mine. exactly why i didnt by a nikon, the higher models dont have the problem though, but i couldn't afford one that price.

MF is good to use on still life type stuff.

I really thought they might have added the lens motor to the D60, but nope! so your still stuck with AF-S lenses if you want autofocus, slightly disapointing, but i suppose it depends if you plan on buying alot of lenses.

I've got the D40 myself and i think for the cost of the D60, i'd much prefer to have a D40 or D40x and use the extra cash for some other glass/accessories.
