Killer minder tortured crying toddler with a hairdryer

An unregistered child minder who tortured a toddler in her care with a hot hairdryer killed him by picking him up by the ankles and flinging him at a bed or settee, Manchester Crown Court was told.
Agnes Wong, 28, was paid £120 a week to look after 17-month-old Hugo Wang at her home in Lower Broughton, Greater Manchester, but inflicted a series of punishments when-he cried. She admitted that she had hit and and bitten the child in the days before his death when he had been “naughty”. She was in the habit of standing him on a table and banging the surface with a ruler or hitting him on the leg. A jury convicted Wong of manslaughter but cleared her of murder, which she had denied.
Medical staff at the Manchester Royal Infirmary alerted police when the unconscious child was admitted in January last year. The child had bite marks, bruising and burns. He underwent surgery to reduce the pressure on his brain caused by internal bleeding but he did not respond. A postmortem examination showed the cause of death to be traumatic head injury. Wong’s partner, Jian Jui, was cleared of causing or allowing the death by an unlawful act and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The judge adjourned sentencing.
