    Default Bandwidth thief

OK, I have had a lot of trouble with my home network, finally solved it by downgrading the firmware on the router. Now, I left it unsecured, went out and came home to see that the WLAN and DSL lights on the router were flashing like mad.

I log on to the routers admin panel, and checked if there were any odd MAC addresses there, and what do you know, under maintenance - dhcp table there was an unknown Host Name "Shkvara-PC" and a strange MAC address. Russians, who live here in the building I'm sure I took great pleasure in denying service for that MAC address in the filtering options.

But it got me thinking (I'm sure the person will change their MAC address), I don't want to secure my network yet, and the question I have for you guys is, can I do some fun stuff with someone elses MAC address? or if I give the access back to the MAC address, could I somehow send them a virus or something?

    Thank you

im not really into the virus side of things but you can get access if theyve shared a file, if while you were in there you deleted their shares then thats up to you to check if they have any shares

    start> run> \\Shkvara-PC

its up to you what you do from there, im sure theres other ways of having fun with their system

edit: i just thought you could fill up their hard drive with files that are set to hidden, most people dont enable the option to see them so it could be a pain in the arse to find and delete, depending on their experience

6 months ago they started building penthouse apartments here, they ripped the attic out for that. So there are two flats with at least 4-5 Russian guys leaving in each, the guys are working on the penthouses....so there's too many of them!

if there are shares on the machines u can find available shares in network places>entire network>ms windows network, or go to them directly by typing \\share into any explorer window.

if you want to just see what they are up to.. try wireshark or similar...

other than that, packet sniffing isnt really a windows game.. there are (cleartext only i think?) password sniffers out there for windows, but i dunno how great they are tbh... never felt it worth finding out.

you really need a network card in promiscuious mode sitting on the LAN listening in on everything.

there is a couple of sites out there that tell you how to set up a proxy for certain mac addresses which you can then mess about with their traffic. Like redirect all page requests they make to goatse, or change all the pages they request to appear upside down and fuzzy

Here is some info on winding up wireless thieves.

Also Marcode mentioned packet sniffing - there is windows based s/w called Ethereal that does the job.

Thanks all, I can't wait to get home this evening. I hope someone has taken the bait, so I can try and make their lives a little more miserable.

Usually I wouldn't go to these lengths, but I'm a mobile employee with a global target, so I need to be online most of the time and I work at least one day a week from home. So, I definitelty don't need some asshole slowing down the already slow connection I have.
