    Tech PS3 and Linux

Has anyone here played with a linux install much?

Does anyone know if I'm likely to run into any major problems if i bought a ps3, installed linux and attempted to use it as a workstation? My requirements are low level, the sort of thing you would use a net cafe pc for. If its cool for web access, some productivity (i use open office on windows, so as long as I can have that running on the ps3 I'd be ok) then I think it'd do the job nicely.

Any one tried something like this? or got any thoughts?

I have installed different distributions on many PS3's. The two main Linux distros for the PS3 at the moment are YDL 6.0 and Ubuntu 7.10. I reccomend YDL 6.0 as its the latest and most upto date since it only came out a week ago and has many new features.

Installation is not that hard. First you must format your hard drive. Then make a partition for the PS3 Game OS and the Other OS (Linux). Then just follow any tutorial for installation and the screen prompts. It usually takes around 2 hours to install Linux.

When done YDL includes a host of applications. Mozilla Firefox, Open Office, Mplayer etc and you can add lots more stuff such as emulators, VLC, torrent clients, Limewire.
But a word of warning Linux is not similar to Windows. If your not really used to it you will find it somewhat hard. Installing applications and programs is not as simple as click and run like Windows. Its command prompt based. But once its all done its quite good especially for simple use such as word processing, email, web browsing etc.

    Hope this helped.

    Here are some helpful links:

    http://psubuntu.com/

    Ubuntu on Playstation 3 site.

    http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/

    YDL official website.

If you want YDL 6.0 you will have to wait till the beginning of March to get it for free. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.

Well once Linux is installed you have an extra PC! ) With the USB ports you can add printers, scanners, web cams etc. You can add programs. VLC will play loads of different file formats. You can use it to download crap from filesharing places. You can install loads of emulators such as NES, SNES, MAME, Amiga, Megadrive. You can do all your work on it. So pretty much most the stuff you can do on a PC you can now do on your PS3. Of course this depends on your level of expertise and how much space you have on your HDD!

I've been a linux man on and off many times over the years, I know the O/S is perfectly capable of meeting my requirements.

I guess what I'm asking is how viable the ps3 is as a pc. I'm pretty sure over HDMI i'll have a good resolution at 1080p that would be sweet for a desktop, and my usb mouse and keyboard should just work. I'm wondering if theres any known issues that I've forgotten, but I really cant see any. The wifi should just join my lan happily, and I should be able to see a windows share via samba.

This is ideal really, I've been looking for a new simple machine, and I think the ps3 will do all I require, coming in under budget, effectively being a Blue Ray player (and it might run a few games) for free

The Wi-Fi got messed up on earlier versions of all the distros. You had to update the kernel. The best best is YDL 6.0 since this solves this issue, has the most recent kernel revision and supports the Sixaxis over Bluetooth which prior versions had trouble with.
