    he he....yes m8.

i got one of those hdmi upscaling dvd players from aldi and if i set tv and dvd to 1080 then now 95% of films are perfect corner to corner picture but still some are not.

    y.....???

and why has it taken / is it taking so long to sort out from a general consumer point of view...??

ok some people in the know are prob running things fine but general public cant be expected to piss about like this,,,,i want plug and play and not fook about till the cows come home for years..

1 x widescreen tv and 1 x widescreen dvd should fill the fookin screen no matter what, no ifs no buts..............

Its called Aspect Ratio and movies are meant to be watched at the cinema as the director intended.
Movies shown in the cinema are filmed in a variety of large screen ratios, but the most common is Panavision 2.35:1. When these movies are shown on TV they do not appear the way they were shown in the cinema.
You wont notice the "black bars" in the cinema , because the screen shape changes (via moving curtains and masking) making the movie "seem to be" full screen. When they get transfered to home use (DVD or whatever) , there has to be a compromise , unless you have a home theater setup with moving screen
