Software to help teach how to play guitar

Just wondering if any of us - DF members play guitar, and have used or know of software to help teach. My friend got a guitar, and I was thinking I am sure there are a few programs out there that let you plug the guitar into the line-in on the PC, and help read what keys you press and help teach how to play notes.. etc.. keep in mind.. I am sure there are also guitars out there that plug into the computer via usb or something, but I just want to buy him a program for line in if there is something out there

Ive just started learning it, got a dvd & some books. It would be interesting to know if this type of software exists although I doubt its of much use. Its all about practice and even though ive got different sources to learn from ive hit a dead end in all of them until I get up to speed with my chords, which ive learnt but now I need to be able to change between them easily - and thats proving alot harder.
