When I was about 8 years old we had a kid at our school called Steven Jolly and while he was on a school trip to the isle of white his mother died, the headmaster at assembly before he returned told us the sad news and asked us all to be sympathetic to Steven and give him a little understanding.
The day Steven returned we were playing football at break in the playground and Steven asked if he could play which was of course up to the guy who's ball it was so he said no you can't play because you haven't got a mum, now I didn't say this but did stand there with the others nodding as we each asked each other if we had mums and agreed that it was fair he didn't play as he didn't have one, I also joined in the chant of cry baby as he ran off in floods of tears.
