Freeview and DVD recorders versus VHS

Hi When freeview DVD recorders came on the scene we where told that they would be better both in quality and sound just one word they missed out COMPATILBILITY between two different machines When I record on VHS I could take the tape out and put it in another machine without doing any thing and either watch it or carry on recording NOT on DVD recorders you have to either finalize and lose till formatted all the "lost" space just to change machines WHY the hell dont manufacturers develope a simple but far usfull system giving the better quality of DVDs yet the flexibilty of VHS?

You could get a dvd recorder with a hard drive, dvd recorder and freeview built in mate.
The quality is far better than vhs and you can rewind live tv and back up to dvd when needed, play divx even from usb's
VHS is dead
