    Default Virus attacks

Just uninstalled my 90 day trial of Norton System Security, and it got me thinking that it's been oddly quiet on the virus front recently? Has protection gotten any better? I wouldn't think so, just like with anything else on the www, it can be hacked no matter what.

No, this is not a heads-up for the mass-mail lohancainedbyraikkonen.exe I'm about to send, just wondering.

One million computer viruses expected this year

Security experts expect the number of computer viruses to number one million by the end of the year. They say this is because individuals and businesses have vastly improved their security practices, forcing malware writers to create new types of viruses and exploits.

OK interesting, now we are talking.
It sounds like the plans of the world’s virus makers are to hold the world hostage or they’ll release one million viruses, that could be a problem if it was all at once. Sounds like a movie, but they’d never make it, never.
Maybe just propaganda by F-Secure, Norton and such

Btw, couldn't you have found a newer article?

TBH, virus` seem quite unpopular at the moment. Now sneaky spyware and malware is rife. It seems to be mainly caused by clicking on popups you shouldnt be too...still, makes for great business.

After that 90 day trial i would recommend not buying norton. From my experiences it was terrible.

the only decent software norton make is the norton removal tool and even that doesnt work as advertised.

i think the simple answer is people have finally become a bit more wise to certain things they get in emails.. as mentioned in this thread already, the threats are now much more likely to come from websites or IM links asking people to check out this link, or install software masquerading as something the user wants, but its really just malware.

the biggest issue really is a lack of education. virus and malware scanners should be considered secondary methods, cos no single scanner will truely cover 100% of threats.

The way it will be going is virtual OS systems - running in the background upacks the delivery and looks at the content - if it is ok it will then unpack for real into your real OS location.

As always the problem lies with the fact that virus keys can be altered to bypass AV systems and new viruses are written every day.

    Food for thought
    Have Fun.

I am told that the new version of Norton is better and does not grab your memory or slow your system down.

I still use AVG - but as I said before Viruses can be manipulated quite easily to bypass the AV system.
    Have Fun.

    Norton is fucking shit

    Seriousley

Now go get Eset System Security v3 or NOD32 (last v2 release)

you cal also do a load of other shit - but thats the best to start with

other great tools to use are killbox & hijackthis.

Also search and destroy is good to have to patch your system from being eaten by a lot of the bullshit out there and its also a nice free tool to have as a backup. dont be enabling all the real time shit tho - the reg edit popups will drive you nuts.

    No offence taken,

I also deal with the same sort of stuff.

Well at the end of the day - they are all Shit as they are only as good as the updates you get.

    New virus comes out.

    Week one
10 small companies find it and update their users

    Week two
10 more small companies find and update
2 larger companies find it and udate

    Week Three

I am sure that you get my drift.

The smaller the AV company the better the updates are, as they seem to be more on the case in relation to keeping their customers.

With regards to Norton - I agree is is crap and may always be crap.

Mcafee used to not be to bad until they started to use their managed system which has made it totally unusable like Norton.

    The struggle continues
    Have Fun.
