Shannon Neighbours Arrested For Fraud
Updated:15:48, Monday April 14, 2008
The next-door neighbours of Shannon Matthews have been arrested on suspicion of benefit fraud, sources have said.
Shannon was missing for weeks
Amanda and Neil Hyett, from Dewsbury Moor, are the sister and brother-in-law of Craig Meehan, the ex-partner of Shannon's mother Karen.
The Hyetts were arrested by West Yorkshire Police officers, working with the Department of Work and Pensions.
It follows on-going inquiries into why nine-year-old Shannon vanished on February 19.
She was discovered hidden in the base of a bed in a flat in Batley Carr, a mile from her home in Dewsbury after an expensive 24-day search by police.
It is understood the investigation into the alleged fraud began before the young girl disappeared on February 19.
A police spokesman said: "The arrests are not related to an alleged abduction of a nine-year-old girl in February."
Coach driver Hyett, 36, and his 25-year-old wife led the search for Shannon after she disappeared.
A number of other people have been taken into custody since the girl was found.
Meehan has been refused bail after being accused of child porn offences.
Meehan's uncle, Michael Donovan, 39, of Lidgate Gardens, Batley Carr, has been charged with Shannon's kidnap and imprisonment.
His trial has been provisionally set for November 11 at Leeds Crown Court.
The girl's mother Karen Matthews, 32, is charged with child neglect and perverting the course of justice.
She was remanded in custody and will next appear at Leeds Crown Court on April 16.
Meehan's mother Alice, 49, and her daughters Amanda Hyett, 25, and Caroline Meehan, 29, were also arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
All three were later released on bail pending further inquiries.

What a 'family'. Is there any one involved in this case that isn't committing a crime?
