there isnt much that can go wrong with pad buttons, you have probably got some fluid of some sort in it that's making it stick, happens all the time.
take it to bits and give the plastic bits a clean.

seriously... don't bother taking a PS3 pad to bits... they are based on the PS2 pad, but they can be very awkward to put back together, mainly the around the L and R trigger buttons. If one of those babies falls apart on you you may never be able to put it back together correctly!

I grabbed a faulty pad off ebay to use for a project. I took it apart carefully but the left trigger assembly just fell to bits once taken apart, I lost the spring unfortunately (which was very small). There's a very small piece of plastic that sits between the top and bottom half of the pad shell. It doesn't actually lock in place either so there's a small balancing act required upon reassembly. It's a pretty stupid design considering...

Just take it back or do the old buy a new one and take it back a week later trick!

I dunno about that, just imagine the feeling of WD40 getting smeared over your controller.

I know you are only recommending a drop or 2, but as you use the controller it will spread itself all over the button half and not feel very nice!

What about a mild solvent to disolve the whatever is making it stick (sounds like some sort of liquid got into it to me too)?? Something like a drop or 2 of nail varnish remover, and because its a solvent it will also disolve within a few hours, unlike the WD40.
