Default Radiators on all over house, or just selective rooms?

I normally just have the radiator on in my main living room and have all the others off, I have heating on full for about 10 mins to warm up quick, then turn down to a quarter just to keep it 'snug', but I was chatting to a builder today who said it doesn't make any real difference how many rads you have on as the once they're working up to temp, the boiler doesn't really use more gas to keep them all up to temp.
I always thought it used more gas?

Is he talking bollox or sense?

Well I think he is probably talking sense, as the hot water has to go through the piping network in your house to get to that single raidator, and as they are all connected anyway.

But I don't know that was just a guess, but I can't really see it making a difference.

    no m8 hes talking balls
2 x22mm pipes(the norm) to feed the rads flow and return . if one rad is on then the boiler will heat the 2 x22mm pipes and the rad. and if u have two rads on then its 2x 22mm pipes and 2 rads etc. so ur not heating as much of the water

Isuppose it would also depend if you have trv's on each individual rad and the location of your themostat as in relation to usage of gas, your boiler will only call for heat or knock off when it senses the temperature you have set at your themostat.

ok burner thats a question i have always wondered about..

so just to throw the spanner in the works...

if i come in and wang the gas fire on to heat a room then thats gonna cost X

but if i come in and put the heating on (still jus a gas burner same as me fire) then thats gonna cost Y..

is there much of a diff between the 2 ???

is it a lot more to heat the whole house than it is to heat one room.........

i'm no expert but the boiler is still heating the water to the same temp, whether you have the rads on full temp or quarter. I suppose the only difference is if you have more than 1 rad turned on.

yes m8 there is a difference
say the whole system there is 8 rads and flow and return pipe = 80gallon. so 10 = 40-50 liters per rad (est) so takes longer to heat and maintain 80 gallon that say 2 rads at 20 gallon

That's sort of what I said to the bloke today, if you took all the pipework and say the volume of water involved and imagined it all in a big pool, surely it would cost more to initially heat and then to maintain that level of heat?

But he was adamant it doesn't cost more because the water still has to go past the rads to get to the next one even if it's turned off

I was thinking that as well burner... I was under the impression that all the rads were linked together in a chain and the water has to pass through them anyway....

But if that was the case I guess you couldn't turn radiators off?

There is a little sense in what the guy is saying ,to heat a system up it requires to heat the full flow and return (all of the pipework to and from your radiators) ,so in a sense all you are not heating is the legs to radiators and the water inside the radiator ,equivalent to a basin of water for each .Also if the system is piped in copper ,the heat loss in the pipework alone (keeping your boiler ticking over ) is about all you will be heating thereafter ,so the money spent on heating and maintaining the heat around the pipework all over your house isnt spent wisely just for one radiator and hot water alone .
