    Help LCD TV above radiator?

We would like to fit a "Big Ass" LCD TV in our bedroom. However the only wall space it could go on has a (standard double convector) radiator below it.

Now, MrDG is well capable of moving a radiator but unfortunately there just isn't any where else in the room you could move the radiator to without causing access problems to the bed!

Obviously installing a LCD above a radiator would be just plain silly, however we are wondering if installing one of those MDF Radiator cabinets would be enough to deflect the heat forwards and not directly upwards???

I guess a standard LCd is around about 13cm thick... but I don't know what this equates to when you've added a wall bracket and mounted it???

Another possibility is, we have some big chunky wall shelving in the room which is actuallu destressed / stained scaffold planking... this stuff is 9" deep and 2" thick which could easily be added to the bottom of the TV as a deflector if needed?

    opinions please?

Im certain to put the moccas on our Plasma here, but it has been on the chimney breast above the fire for the past 4 years and it is still working fine.

When I first put the TV up I fitted a Glass shelf above the fire to deflect the heat and it appears to have done the trick.

    Good luck with it.

It DOES seem to be asking for trouble.

Worth putting up a shelf first, and it would benefit the room by having the heat deflected instead of straight up. Or you could hang a thermometer above it just to see how hot its gonna get.

wouldnt be my first choice but if needs must i would take a few measures to protect my tv
    1. rad cover/shelf to deflect heat
    2. turn down rad, if on a thermastatic valve turn it down to 3
    3. take out extended warranty (just encase)

It should be fine. Most TV's will operate at up to 35 - 40 degrees C or so anyway so unless you like it scorchio in your room then I don't think you have anything to worry about.

    Alternatives -
Get a vertical radiator and have it to one side.
Get an LCD projector instead and mount it the other side of the room to display on the wall you want.

I would have thought you would get more heat radiated upwards than you would with a conventional central heating radiator ?

Yep, well spotted , thats one of the Mordaunt Short 7.1 setup I have

I can't see a real problem, as stated the TV will prob get very hot itself. Maybe just turn the radiator down, so it won't ever get that hot ?

Erm... everyone seems to be assuming the TV heat and the radiator heat will happily co-exist in a nice constant bubble of non-variable temperature??! If you have a TV running at 40deg and bang on a radiator underneath it running at 25deg, you're going to find your telly notching up at least another 10deg.

Personally, I'd consult an expert before risking my £800 telly on the guesswork of non-qualified tinternetters....

switch the radiator off and 'create your own heat' when it gets a bit nippy.
