    Default my daughter needs YOU

    ok chaps and chapettes.

my 11 year old daughter has a medion mim2210 notebook and its goosed!
she claims it was ok until she downloaded and installed itunes on the 23/5/2008

now it is very very intermittent at booting to the point of maybe it will boot once in 30 attempts and even when it does boot it will crash very soon after bringing up the desk top.

i did note on one of the rare occasions it booted that the date was set to 2048, have also tried system restore and it has started to do the restore but then crashed, also on one occasion only it has done a chkdsc and it completed and showed no issues. also one time it started to load the start up programs saw thw first pic

on the 29 times it doesnt boot it wont even boot to bios! nor will it boot from a bootable cd

also when it crashed i also got the BSD (pic 2 n 3) on a number of occasions. two pics because two lots of error codes.

most of the time it just sits there, seems to try to load but then stops as if its turned off then tries to load again over and over

at the moment it is sat next to me powered on but i cant even hear anything, i.e fan ,guess if its in sleep i wouldnt though

its running eXPerience and has the following

    # celerin M ??? speed
    # VIA Chrome9 HC DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB shared memory
    # High definition audio with 2 integrated loudspeakers
    # 15.4" TFT WXGA widescreen colour display with 1280 x 800 pixels
    # 16:10 format for optimized DVD playback
    # Dual layer DVD -Writer/ Re-writer (DVD±R/±RW/±R DL/-RAM +CD-RW+DVD-ROM)
    # 80GB hard disc drive
    # 1024 DDR II RAM
    # 10/100 Mbit Fast Ethernet LAN port
    # Wireless networking - 802.11b/g up to 54MBit/s

any ideas whats wrong guy, besides th eobvious i.e its a medion!!!

IRQL Less or not equal = Usually a problem with drivers.

Date Changing itself (Forward) = Usually Equals virus

Try booting into safe mode and running system restore from there.. Failing that uninstall all your drivers and install them fresh from safe mode and run a virus scan.

Intermittent in booting = It takes ages before the Windows XP Load screen appears?
Is the hard drive clicking or anything? Does the system stall when you turn it on and it detects/initialises hard drives?

tried to boot into safe mode and when its one of the 30 times it will load it crashes before i can do anything anyway. although that was where i managed to try the first system restore.

yeah hard drive seeems to try click in, doesnt so much as stall as appears to turn itself off then on tries again then off again, had it sat here for last hour now doing that not booted once!!!

im fearing virus and as it wont even boot to bios im thinking a pretty bad virus?!?

It wont boot to the BIOs what do you mean?

If your hard drive is clicking loud (Not normal operation) or it sounds like its powering up and down constantly, its possible your hard drives fucked (If you can remove it without voiding warranty, do it and see if you can access the BIOS then)

Have you tried running the Windows XP recovery console or reinstalling XP?

I doubt its a virus if you cant access your BIOS.. they are rare as hell.

Run a memory test. I've seen this problem several times caused by faulty RAM.
You can download one from http://www.memtest.org/

crazy, search the forums /net for hirens boot cd. If it loads and it stable then you know at least the pc infrstructure is ok and it's a windows thing (ever heard of windows breaking? lol).

hirens has more tools than a swiss oxford IT graduate knife, inc memory, hard drive and other system utilities.
    I'm new to this

when i say it wont boot to bios i mean it doesnt go through bios then crashes, it wont go that far! tried booting from a bootable cd and that doesnt work either, so no point trying to use recovery/diagnostic software

will see if it will boot without the HD in

thanks guys, except FREDDY your input was feck useless!!

Ive had this problem before and my fix was a reseat of all major components...

take out the ram and reseat it then try the processor(this is a little more difficult but could be the source of the problem)...

Had this the other week with a desktop.

    Changed ram. Still BSOD.
    Changed hdd. Still BSOD.
    Changed GFX. Still BSOD.

It was an old box, so shitbinned it and bought the £150 desktop from eBuyer. Figured by the time I had replaced the mobo and processor, I may as well buy a new box.

From your screenie, could be a virus, but as someone said before boot Hirens or UBCD and leave it be and see if it dies, if not. Backup the things you care about off it and Re-install XP and full format the HDD>

That kinda rules Hirens and co out.

My IBM used to do this when its hard drive was fucked, it wouldnt go through the bios and had to be power cycled.. If you listened you could hear the drive power cycling itself trying to work.

Eventually the BIOS timed out trying to initialise it and booted with No system media present. Please insert bootdisk.

thought fuck it and download hirens anyway and have tried boot with it! first time it got to the first screen after asking would i like to boot from hd or cd!!! second time got to point asking if i would like to boot from hd or cd i tried to choose 2 but as i was about to click it crashed and now it wont even attempt, yet again!!!

hmmmm if the fan isnt working would that stop it booting, does it have a fail safe? only i have just taken the back off to take out the HD and the fan isnt spinning it moves slightly when i turn it on as if going to spin but then does nothing!?

If the fan isnt working its likely the system is overheating and would cause crashing/instability and failure if used for a prolonged period where the heat levels rise beyond the limits.

Sounds like either a goosed HDD or its overheating due to the fan not running!

Modern CPU's can reach 100C in a few seconds of not kept cool! So it could be that! Intel laptop CPU's have built in fail safes that kill the power to the CPU once the temp reaches 125C, Intel desktop CPU's cut out at 100C.

EDIT: Mate, you might have the same prob I had with my old lappy as described here.

Ended up being heat from when it used to overheat warping the mobo! I used the hot air gun method (as ued on the 360) to fix it, and it now works again!

I tried every test possible, and it would freeze randomly when the mobo moved a bit, and when you flexed it in certain places it would pick up where it left off!

It doesnt necc beep on HDD Errors... (SMART Errors do afaik)

Usually it will beep if there is memory error, POST error, CPU Error, etc.

Adi you could probably buy a replacement fan/heatsink for it (The fan is usually integrated) and try that.

If you can inspect the insides, if you dont see any damage then its worth a shot, failing that there might be a laptop repair centre that will diagnose and repair it cheap.

Or you can sell it on ebay for spare parts...

ok i have managed to get it to boot up, after a hundred attempts, anyway i jumped into bios and disabled the HD boot and had it set to just cd also i noticed it was set to post beep disabled so i set that to enabled, also set it to boot from usb stick incase i got hold of one to try...

it now boots to cd every single time i turn it off and on, all system tests i have done using hirens have passed...

some of the HD tools say no HD installed seatools which i have running as we speak does see it, on starting the short test it flashes a warning that the HD has been overheat 106, i let it continue the short test and it passed, i also got the same message when i clicked for long test but clicked ok to test on that too, its currently running.

seatools also says its smart supported and enabled, also says smart has NOT been tripped.

i guess we are looking at the HD being ok as it passed the tests, but then it cant be seen by some software so while its inherently ok its got a virus?? cant do virus check as is because the hirens virus checkers dont see the drive!

which leaves me with the problem of how to do a scan on it when it cant be seen? failing that how can i format it if its not seen!?

edit: just finished the long test and says read scan passed
