    Default New Tom Tom

Just after a bit of advice really.

I need to buy my father a Sat Nav for his birthday.

I want to get him a Tom Tom unit, but want to know which is best for the purpose. He lives in Spain though!

I am familiar with the fact I can buy a UK Tom Tom and buy a large SD card, copy my European map from my old AyToBe unit and use the keygen in the sticky to activate it.

Only thing is TomToms have changed a bit since, and I'm not sure if this all can still work, whether there are updated maps/software etc. Do the newer TomToms even have an SD card slot?

I know you can get some other cheaper SatNavs to do the same job, the AyToBe and Navigator, etc' but I want a branded TomTom unit.

To sum up, can someone tell me which one to buy from say Halfords or Currys etc' that I can stick a full Euro map on (coz he lives in Spain) ;-)

    TIA

The higher end ones still have the SD card ie the 5x0/7x0/9x0 models but not the "ONE" models unless you track down an old second hand one. I bought a new 930 while I was in in the usa last month and it's the muttz nuts (imho of course).

But the 720's etc are tumbling in price now and are a good buy - the latest navcore firmware adds support for sdhc cards too - I'me running an 8Gb one in my new machine.

Maps and firmware including the new V8 maps with the (limited) lane guidance features are available from the usual places.

If money is not a problem get him a new 930, otherwise Id go for the 720 or a 520

Prices are cheaper for a TT ONE European than a 520 tho...

Price is always an issue! Don't really want to spend more than 140/150 quid.

Was hoping I could Euro hack one of the 120 ones ;-)

The euro ones are just as hackable - but as far as I know the only difference between them and the UK ones is that the has a 512Mb internal drive and the Euro one has a 1Gb internal drive. The newer Western Europe maps are either 1.6 or 2Gb depending on which map you get,

Obviously neither of those maps will fit on either machine's internal drive and they don't have card slots any more as you already know.

Halfords have the ONE Europe XL on offer here for £149.99 using the code on that page.

It has the SD card slot that will make it much more expandable

Does the TomTom One UK XL have the SD Card slot too? Halfords website says yes...

Therefore I can get that for £119.98 (with the voucher) and bang in my Europe map on a 2G SD card.

    Happy days!
