Default Hacker 'told he would fry' in US

If you cant do the time

Hacker 'told he would fry' in US

by JOEL TAYLOR - Monday, June 16, 2008

    Gary McKinnon

A hacker was threatened by American investigators, who said he would 'fry' for breaking into their military computers, his lawyer told law lords on Monday.
Gary McKinnon - accused of 'the biggest military computer hack of all time' - was apparently told by prosecutors he faced a life sentence unless he pleaded guilty.
This pressure meant an extradition for trial in the US would breach his human rights, added defence lawyer David Pannick. The comments were made at Mr McKinnon's appeal to the House of Lords, the highest British court of appeal.
The 44-year-old, known as Solo, is accused of hacking into 97 Pentagon and Nasa systems in 2001 and 2002, causing £475,000 of damage.
Extradition proceedings began in 2005 against McKinnon, of north London, after then home secretary John Reid granted a US request.
McKinnon has claimed he could only access the systems because of lax security. A decision by law lords is expected within three weeks.

    Load of bollox.

Big public media outcry about how he is so bad and going to pay etc etc etc.

Wait till it dies down, he will disappear and be on their payroll.

Why get rid of such a clever mind.

Cant beat em, join em and all that.

I also seem to remember that despite their claim of £475,000 of damage there was actually no damage done and that's just money they spent updating their security measures which they should have done anyway.

The Metro is one of the few nice parts of my day at work...which is saying something about the fun I have at work.
It certainly is sh*t, but it's free, and no-one makes you read it.

As for this story, it's slightly amusing, and whilst he deserves what he gets, they will probably 'employ' him during his prison time (unless we've been taken in by 'Catch Me If You Can', and think they actually do that when they don't - if they did, surely security wouldn't be so lax in the first place...).

And as for the politics, no way should we extradite him - we should extradite the extradition treaty, in a coffin wrapped in a British flag, and loaded with C4, addressed to Mr Geroge W. Bush, the White House, USA.
