    Mac Essential Mac apps

What I wanted this section for was to have a sticky containing Mac apps that do the jobs of their Windows counterparts. Peeps who migrate from PC's would have something to read and a list of apps that they need to 'obtain'.

When I got my first Mac I had Parallels installed (better springboard for running Windows on a Mac then VMWare IMO) and it took me near 5 months to find great Mac replacement apps and finally ditch the Windows crutch completely.

So perhaps we could use this thread to suggest apps and then I'll dig through it and haverst a definitive list.

So post up you top apps and argue against others mentioned.

FTP - I've used a few and I've found the one that I am 100% happy with. Transmit - http://www.panic.com/transmit/

It has a preview pane of remote files which is awesome. Does everything else you come to expect from a FTP client. It'll auto open Photoshop or your text editor with one click and save it back up to server.

    Can't rate it high enough.

As a dedicated mac user i'd say one of my favourite apps is Adium, all in one IM that supports every protocal I know of! (MSN, AIM, ICQ, even facebook chat!)

It's fully skinnable/customisable and makes the microsoft messenger for mac look like a joke!

    Check it out: http://adiumx.com/

I actually have had that site bookmarked for a while now. You've given me a boost to get it installed. Nice one.

.nzb management client - Unison http://www.panic.com/unison/

Don't believe there is a huge choice for the Mac but this is the best I've found. It teams up with MacPar (http://www.xs4all.nl/~gp/MacPAR_deLuxe/) and it'll unzip and delete all the crap leaving you with the .dmg or whatever.

    Nice neat interface too.

Quite like Transmit myself... Another good one if you just want a quick and easy ftp app is Cyberduck.

This what this thread is all about fella

I used Fetch for ages and is a great app. I just needed a little more functionality. Only because I use FTP all day for work. If I didn't then Fetch would be my app of choice.

VLC - plays all sorts of video and audio. Pop it in your dock and your drag media onto it. The preset icon is shit - so swap it out with this one

Flickr Uploader, excellent (and official) drag and drop app that'll upload your photos for you.

App Zapper remove apps and their resulting prefs etc with one click

Little Snitch, monitor and configure incoming and outgoing connections - it's really brilliant

HandBrake, converts DVD to iPod compatible .mp4. Again, another shit icon, use this one instead

Isquint, convert all other movie media to iPod's .mp4 - replacement icon here

Senuti, transfer your ipod library back to your mac. (Senuti is iTunes backward - see what they did there?)

Flip 4 Mac, plays Windoze Media files in Quick Time

iPod Reset Utility, official Apple app - don't throw away that fu(ked iPod Shuffle just yet

Keep Super Duper in mind - makes a bootable clone of your drive on an external HDD. Handy when swapping out/upgrading your HDD or when you feel a bricking is in the post

Yeah, dirty Mac fanboy Thrush got me onto it

Oh, because iMovie 08 is fucking dross compared to the 2007 version - you can get a free download of iMovie HD 6 (laden with many more features) from Apple here - free if you have iLife 08 installed, that is.

Tansmission - i Use this for the odd torrent i need to get (when i cant get a NBZ) really simple and good interface.

Paragon NTFS - Allows native writing to NTFS drives (Normally a mac can read but not write to them)

    Cheers
