    I just right click and select "compress". . . never failed to either compress OR decompress, quickpar takes care of other needs. . .

    betterzip is a great little app, its like winrar but for mac, its not that expensive as well.

    Switch is one I have stumbled across recently. Very good to convert your Audio files.

    Had quite a collection of .flac files and it dealt with them to create .mp3 so that iTunes would see them.

    Works on Windows too: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    I use Dr. Cleaner, for freeing up space. Have not had to reboot since installing 6 months ago.
