Default Laptop. Problem with the keyboard... Maybe.

I have a HP Pavillion ze5700 with a weird problem I cant seem to solve.

I turned it on this morning and it acted as though a key was stuck down (beeping like mad!). After messing about with it, removing keys, blowing with air canister it stll had the problem.

I then decided, remove the keyboard and see if the laptop boots to windows. It does, but the password field on my Windows logon screen gets filled with charators still, as if the keybaord is still attached with a stuck key.

I've got it stripped down at the moment, but cant seem to find any faults or obvious problems.

    Any idea's?

Maybe a duff connection in the ribbon from the keyboard? How old is it?

    It's dated 2004.

Could it be a duff ribbon though, even if it still does the same with the keyboard removed completely?

When you remove the keyboard are you removing the ribbon with it? Because it might be a duff ribbon if your not.

However if it does this when both the ribbon and keyboard are removed its something a bit more complex.

Have you had a look at the connector the ribbon goes into on the mobo? Is there anything which might be causing a short in it, or on the legs connected to the mobo?

Keyboard with attached ribbon are on seperate side of the room to the rest of the laptop.

Didnt think to check the legs, but they seem OK. The ribbon clip that holds the keyboard ribbon in place I've pulled up to get a better look inside, but all seems in order. I'm inserted a small needle and 'clicked' each contact to make sure they are seperated and still moving too.

To add, there is a slight kink in the keyboard ribbon, but I wouldnt have thought it to be the cause seeing as the 'key pressing' is audible even when the keyboard is not in the laptop.

Also, I get a strange list I've not seen before as the laptop boots up.

    something like -

    80,00
    80,01
    81,02
    11,09

I was guessing these are key co-ordinates or something? Nothing else on screen apart from this list.
Then BIOS splash screen (HP) re-appears.

Videos might be easier to show...

I've manged to get this fu(ker into Winda's now. But it's really winding me up.

I've attached a second keyboard and managed to log into it. I've installed a couple of keyloggers.

One doesnt seem to show anything.
The other explains it's recieving loads of keypresses.

I manged to open a word document, but it immediately shot to the end on the document. It looked like it was Page Down doing this (as opposed to the 'End' key). Bear in mind though, it's doing it without the laptop keyboard or PS2 keyboard attached at all (once loaded). The strange thing is, end wouldnt fill the password feild with charactors would it?

    Thats something else thats happening.

It's really boiling my blood this thing, has anyone got any clues?

If its still doing it with keyboard disconnected i would think its a interrupt from the Mobo going to the proc. More likely the Proc.

also test each ram stick one at a time

Excuse my noviceness, but whats the 'Proc'?
I'm guessing the Keyboard ribbon connector?

It only has 1 SO-DIMM (256) stick inserted into it at the moment.

Have you tried it with the mousepad disconnected?

I disconnected that and have my PS2 keyboard still plugged in and it's stopped filling the password field.

    "Proc" means Processor or CPU.

With the original keyboard, it's filling it again.

I would guess a keyboard and mousepad check is now in order?

first thing i would do is boot the lappy from winternals or other
and make sure its not sware problem, and also clear the bios.
as said b4 it could be the mobo (chip that handles keboard irqs)

good luck , hope you sort it Plug
