No idea what 2k would get you but the CBR600 is a very good bike, i had one of them till i was clipped on a roundabout and hit a curb. Very Nippy and agile. As a beginner it will be spot on but after a while i was longing for more as when you are out on a ride you will have to ride it quite hard going up and down the gears.

I upgraded to a fireblade after the crash and never looked back (till i go knocked off that). 1000cc bikes are more forgiving if you ride them steadily, out on a ride you can just stay in 3rd and the grunt will sort out everything.

But as a first bike it will be awesome.

I would highly recomend a CBR 600F as your first bike. 2k can get you a not bad bike niewish id say 6-8 years old.
The 600F was one of the best all round bikes i ever had.

    Cheap parts
    Cheapish servicing
    not bad insurance

Yeah cbr 600 is a good starter bike mate i was going to get one for my 1st (road) bike but opted for the yamaha yzf600r thundercat as it came with a years free insurance was a lovely bike also and another i'd reccomend as a first bike especially given your price range... A couple of years later i got a fireblade (900cc version) and the build quality and general feel of the honda was fantastic which makes me think the 600cc would be good too

    how about something totally different

I went for a 03 600 Fazer for my first bike
as i was trying to take into consideration different things
    ie.
comfort factor (sitting up position was excellent)
half faring offered decent wind protection
not slow by any stretch (capable of 145)
    the handling was excellent
fuel (the 03 model had a 22litre tank and i always got 200miles plus out of a tank, worth considering in current climate)
and i liked the look of the 03 model (sharp faring as opposed to rounded)

i had mine from new until november last year when i swapped it for a ZX-12R (huge grin factor, but gotta learn restraint)

Aye good choice of a first bike. Although if you want something bigger then go for it. My first bike was a ZX7R and at 21 years of age that was fantastic. :-)

Think you'll find the fazer was a de-tuned version of the thundercat which i had as my 1st road bike, if so i would reccomend both, quick enough by anyones standards and the mid range torque on it was superb, only fault i could find really was the gearbox was a bit clunky but not too much drama, think most yamaha's suffer a bit with that.

still looking for the ideal cbr600. I have my theory test tomorrow all being well but might have to cancel it back a few days, work issues!! Then i have spoken to a local training company that offer a guaranteed pass with bike hire, helmet etc etc and test costs all in for £550.

think thats a good price !!

Sounds like a good price to me mate, about what i paid 11years ago lol, would reccomend using your own lid tho mate, wouldn't like to use a hire lid myself mate after reading things about diseases and parasites that can be transferred lol

Depends on what your willing to spend mate... I usually go for arai or shoei but they are at the more expensive end of the scale (my last arai cost £400) You can usually pick up some good lids for around £100 or so, just have a look for an ACU sticker on the back gold prefferabally...

http://www.sounddistribution.co.uk/p...recnumber=3459 This one dosen't look too bad for just over £100

Looks like you get a free helmet bag and neck warmer too

your very lucky to get a DAS booking this month. Cos of the new tests in October all courses are jammed. So I'd get on it asap mate. As for lids, it's a mine field LOL. Defo go try one on for size cos a wrongly fitted lid is a death trap. Try on, get your size and buy on line

I have a lazer lz6, got 5/5 in the recent sharp tests and cost £60. Very nice it is aswell.

I had as 50cc when I was 16, then a 125cc for a few years at 17. My first real bike was a CBR600FV and was perfect to start with. It did everything well, quick, acceleration was enjoyable, started everyday all year round in all weather.

Once you have the experience of a years worth of riding it, you will start to notice little things that you will want a bigger bike again. Once you've had a pillion on the back, 600cc isn't powerful enough! I found the brakes not to be as good as I would have liked too. In 3rd gear and higher, you need to keep the revs up higher the 5k for it to be responsive as they'd be a seconds pause if you were below 5k and wanted to pull away. I had a service with Honda and cost £600! As it was my only form of transport, I decided to sell up and get a car. I have since regretted that day, as nothing was better than being at a red light and pulling the throttle back as soon as amber flashes, then to reach 60 in 3-4 seconds..... Awesome!

I would highly recommend the CBR6 as it will make you happy, whats better? Honda's are built like trojans and look the dogs. Good luck

#Just to add, don't spend stupid money on kit too. I got my CBR6, paid £250 for a great Dainese helmet which I still have, wasted £600 on a Dainese Tribal 2-piece leather suit that was worn 1/2 dozen times (Bit impractical than all-weather kit), £100 for a all-year jacket, £60 for waterproof trousers with padding and winter lining, £120 on Sidi boots, and £40 for decent gloves. With other little things, my kit cost around £1200! I would advise you to get a well fitting comfortable helmet and preferably see if you can try before you buy as even £100+ helmets can whistle like buggery, give you a drafty eye or the strap can be naff and you find the chinguard travelling up your face and block your vision! Don't go for just looks, comfort is essential as you will normally find that you wear the boots, trousers all day if you are touring and walking about. I'd get off to Heingerike and get boots, all-weather trousers with padding and removable lining, a jacket with padding and removable lining, and a soft pair of gloves for the summer and thick insulated gloves for the winter. There clothing is highly recommended!
