Laptop keeps dropping CAT5 and/or Wireless connection

Getting really frustrated with this.

Laptop - Sony Vaio AW31 - 100gbit ethernet or (whatever) Wireless.

My laptop IS registered with my modem.

When using the internet, the line keeps dropping, whether i am using the wireless or ethernet connection. I have tried registration and other cat cables. Even tried using the same port (No1) as the main PC. The main PC NEVER EVER drops connection.

Why oh why is this happening.

Recently just learnt it is not just my Laptop. My misses (IBM THink pad) also drops connection (she is only using ethernet, every time it drops she needs to re establish her work secure connection). There is not regularity to this, can last only a few minutes, to a good few hours. Matters not what is being done, general browsing, BBC iPlayer, sometimes not even using internet and i notice the pop up say, connection lost.

It is driving my insane and I have found nothing on google.

Is anyone able to shed any light or ideas on this. I am using my laptop more and more (as the main PC has started playing up).

I had a previous main workstation PC, this was also fine when connected. Also, when the PS3 and Wii are connected, these never loose connection either. Just appears to be the laptops. Previously the router has been totally reset and re-established with no fix to this problem. SO the ISP has (understandably) said it is not the router, not their problem.

First thing I'd say is have youchecked the power management settings for the NIC and wireless card? May be worth ensuring that they're both disabled.

What sort of cards are they?

Might also be worth disabling things like TCP chimneying, RSS etc, shouldn't really be causing the sorts of problems you're seeing there though but worth bearing in mind just in case.

Do not knwo what NIC is (but will google and check), power mangment is to NEVER shut down/ go into sleep mode. But will see if this is different foe the wireless card (not sure what type it is, need to look).

This does not explain why sometimes, i can view hours of BBC i and 4OD and other days constanly dropping if power mangement.

BUT, i will check out the above and see what these sitautions/settings behold.

The NIC is your network card which you're connecting the CAT5 ethernet cable too - if you look in Windows Device Manager at the properties of the NIC & the wireless card they both have a setting for power management which is separate to the main Windows power settings.

Probably leave alone the other settings I mentioned for now as it can cause more trouble than it's worth if you're not sure what you're doing there.

What manufacturer and type are the NIC and wireless card, and what driver version are you using and what version of Windows is it? Is it up to date with Windows Updates etc?

What is your version of windows? TCP is your normal protocol used by your network card (NIC) to connect to the net.

Vista basic.
Got the free Win7 but not got around to it yet. Perhaps I should in fact do that sooner rather than later.

When i get back, will post full spec. Will be good to know who to deal with Vista despite not intending to stick with it.

not sure on how good this link is m8 but it may help on the short term till one of the more techy guys can assist if this doesnt.

There is a virus that keeps changing the proxy settings. This would explain the drop outs.

Personally I would do your upgrade... This may be the easiest way of sorting things out with pissing about.
