I want to block a terminal in our network from using certain websites (social networking).
Is it a simple procedure and how do I do it please?

You can do it using the hosts file:

Cheers. I've located the folder and the HOSTS file but cannot seem to access/open it in order to add the ip addresses??
Or click Start - Run
and type
notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Click ok, and it should open.
If your running NT or 2000 change the windows folder to winnt

Guns don't kill people rappers do, I'm a fucking rapper and I might kill you.
Or you could check their PC when they have gone to see if they have the password stored. Then reset it and then close down their facebook account
you should also be able to apply rules to a particular machines ip if you have a semi-decent router with surf-control options.
might even be able to set a schedule so they can browse during lunch hours only or something.
depends on your setup m8, you can do it at network level (via the router), server level (via AD/GPO/DNS), or client level (via HOSTS file). only the first 2 will give u any sheduling config tho. the latter just basically over-rides DNS and tells it the site aint there.
just depends how much configurability you want and how savvy the user is.. if they know what they are up to, editing the HOSTS file wont stop em.
Well that's what bothered me as he is a pretty smart bloke. Just want to keep him off FB as it's too disruptive and he cannot seem to discipline himself as we have asked him to. So now we have to stop his access.
Any chance of telling me how (layman terms please ) via the router?...I only want to restrict it on his terminal.
router is prolly the easiest to implement
connect to your router (via the ip) enter the user/pass which i'll assume u are aware of..
now the next bit depends on router model... they all have different firmware
but really what ull be looking for is called something like blocked sites, surf control, site rules... somethign along those lines, should be fairly obvious, can certainly help u out more if u know the router make/model.
next step will prolly be adding the domains u want blocked and with any luck, the specific local machines/IP's u wish to block... these should also be fairly straight forward settings. ask if your stuck, even a screen shot would help.
you should have these functions, most routers do. generally, the more expensive the router is, the more configurable these options will be.
hth..
You the man Code, it's worked a treat...now I am the only one here who can access them! buhahahaha!
K+ for your help.
