Default Ubuntu on PS3 - anyone tried it?

I'm thinking about getting rid of my PC that I currently have plugged into my TV and installing Ubuntu on the PS3 instead as its quieter. I've seen a guide on it here that seems straight forward. http://psubuntu.com/wiki/HomePage

My question is has anyone tried it and how does it perform? I'll have a NTFS formatted USB hard drive plugged in so will the PS3 pick it up as i know the PS3 only supports FAT32. Also what's the performance like as i'll want to play 720p .mkv files on it and it would have to play them smoothly.

Or should i forget this idea and just convert my .mkv files to vob's and play them on the PS3 from a memory stick instead?

I really can't decide what to do for the best with my PC's at home and its starting to send me slightly mad

Iv been doing the for the last 2/3 days....

I ordered a 320GB HDD, and this bluetooth mouse & keyboard.

It has been a BITCH to setup! Read my posts here and here.

It's now running a charm, but I still couldn't get my WPA WLAN to work no matter what I tried. I must have tried at least 10 times, all to no avail!! I've heard WEP works out of the box, but I didn't want to comprimise my network. However I have a BT Vision box near my PS3 which is connected to the BTHomeHub via 200Mbps powerline adapters.

What I did was connect the powerline adapter to a switch I have lying around via ethernet, then I plugged my PS3 and my BT Vision box into the switch and it all works fine now.

Not been fun going through all this.

What you need to do is....

    • Backup PS3 data
    • Format HDD
    • Restore PS3 data
    • Install Ubuntu (7.10 for PPC is the newest one that works with PS3)
    • Update kernel
    • Remove old kernel (if you dont, it will cause you LOTS of problems. Well it did for me at least.)
    • use "fbset" to adjust screen so it fits right
    • DONE!!

If you need any help, let me know.

As for Ubuntu running on PS3, its a bit slow because there is NO RSX access (its blocked by a hypervisor), only 256MB of XDR RAM and it runs off the CELL's PPU instead of using the SPU's and just having the PPU "overlook" the SPU's.

Not bad for £100 (mouse/keyboard for £40 and 320GB HDD for £60), but not as good as a proper Ubuntu PC.

Also Adobe flash player does not work with it, only gnash does, and its still in alpha or beta stage. It works with small flash things on some websites, but things like google video & youtube are out of the question.
