Default How much percentage of your pay is acceptable..

I am currently with an agency working in IT, I recently discovered that they are making nearly 50% on what I get paid..

Is this standard and is there anyway to challenge this...

eg.. I get £100, they get £90 for the day.. for doing jack shit...

I understand they got me in there but ffs man, £90 per day over months is disgusting in my eyes..

Really tempted to just f*** it off but then again, some other mug would just be brought in.

If they are getting 50% on what you get paid and you are getting £100 for the day then they will be getting £50 not £90. Maybe they knew your maths were shit

50% of the total amount paid beerman...

The thing is, if they weren't getting that £90 do you really think they'd pass it on to you? It's their money, let them waste it how they want. (And giving it to an agency is about the most wasteful thing you can do with money)

I used to work for an agency in the oil industry back in the late 90's

I got paid between £11 an hour in the uk and £15 an hour when I was abroad - the agency who I worked for charged me out at £60 and £100 per hour.

Who actually pays your wages? is it the agency directly or the company you are working for? with my case above I was paid by the agency - I got my timesheet signed by a local manager at the company I was physically working for and faxed it off to my agency every friday, and my pay went into the bank during the next week. So they did have a few overheads such as Tax/PAYE etc and they had to pay my holiday pay - still thought it was excessive but at the time if I worked abroad I was making up to £1000 a week take home (with overtime and expense allowances) so I was to busy pissing it up against the nearest walls to be bothered by it LOL

You shouldnt look at it that way.

If you get the going ratel for what you do then thats that. The additonal amount the company make after paying for you is down to their ability to sell the service.
Also in business there are lots other costs such as marketing and advertising, insurance costs, administration costs, etc. All these have to be paid for before they make any profit.

The chargeout rate for my staff is based on a multiplier of salary of between 2.2 and 2.8 depending on their experience (1.8 being breakeven). I think that is pretty standard

You're doing well. In my IT job I'm hired out at £450 a day when in reality I get about £100 of that. In my part time freelance rigging work I'm piad £150 per day plus all expenses and hired out to the customer at £350 plus expenses.

I don't do any work for other companies, but work for a big oil company where each person has to "time write" - basically saying how many hours they put into each project/other department. The idea is that departments like mine (IT) end up costing nothing because they time write all their staff time to the departments that they are doing the IT for, and the costs come off the profitable departments (like the ones that make the actual oil)

For that I get sold out at just over £700 a day. I make about £110 a day, so about 15% or so. The other money pays for the cost of having me - my chair and my desk and my cubicle and my PC and my parking space, as well as the fact that you need more bosses to manage more staff and everything that goes with that. It fcuks me off a bit that my chair gets paid more than I do.

How can you possibly work that out? at the end of the day you accept what they offer you its non of your business how much they make from your skills.

at least your not a mechanic at a big franchise like merc or toyota. They get paid fuck all compared to what is charged per hour for labour. Like other have said its to pay for other services such as marketting, admin and resources but its still shite.
