Something funny is going on. I've had a pretty consistent 2MBish download (20mb connection) up until a couple of days ago, tonight and yesterday though I've only been getting about 700k. This is non SSL btw. The speed isn't consistent like it was though so not sure that it's throttling.
Have been reading through cableforum and virgins own forums and looks to me like it's a fault rather than traffic shaping.
ive been getting 1 meg on all the ports ive tried on newshosting. also virgins own doesnt do any better.
If they are restricting then it could be time to find another supplier.
100 meg connection

Same here, i've usually get just under 6mb/s on my 50mb line. Been getting between 1 and 1.5mb/s since yesterday on NG :/
Re the throttling - I see it through the day on uTorrent using TheBox for the kids' shows, it's woeful. But using SSL on Astraweb I very seldom see any problems? Pulling Alcatraz down now at 3.75 MB/s on a 30 meg connection, and pulled 2 HD movies down yesterday one in the morning and one late afternoon and both came down full speed. I'm probably jinxing it now.. It'll be a pain in the arse if they go for the SSL ports as well as I'm stuck with Virgin for now. Got a letter this morning about price increases as well
Like I said, it's not throttling. Astraweb have US based servers so they aren't affected but Giganews, Newshosting, VM servers all rely on a link with Amsterdam run by Highwinds which is faulty.
If your usenet supplier has a US based server you can switch to then it should solve the problem.

Nah, this p2p thing has been going on for ages for me. I was just commenting on the general thread topic really and hadn't noticed where it was at presently.
VM is giving me just over 100KBps from newshosting ssl(443) (10am) - last night was the same.
Other net activity seems normal though. Speedtest.net just gave me 9.77Mbps which is expected for my connection.
anyone confirm a provider thats working right now?
I'm getting 48Mbps on ssl-eu.astraweb.com port 443 as I type.
'fraid not. I tried looking but couldn't find anything. Just guessing but as it's supposed to be an undersea cable and doesn't appear to be a major link could be a while.
