You don't need to chip to use your backup games now.

I got the standard Wii with Wii Sports, then bought an extra controller.

My 3 year old loves Wii Sports, Mario & Sonic Olympics, Disney Cars and SpongeBob.

MarioParty 8 is also very good for younger gamers.

The iso loader still requires some work (if you look at the compatibility list)

If you decide to go down the chip route - I can recommend the Argon chip from Infectus - I'm running one in a new wii (d2e chipset) and it's great

d2pro's are very popular too, tbh at the min i would just get a chip installed if you want it hassle free.

I would be very surprised if the iso loader wasnt knocked out at the next wii firmware release.

I would also get a wii sooner rather than later, then you wont have to mess around removing the epoxy resin before you chip it.

any of the current chips should work but the D2pro is highly recomended, ive fitted a few and theyre flawless.

I certainly wouldnt go for the iso loader yet, its far from being finalised and will probably be shot down before it is.

There isnt really a great deal else to know, get your machine chipped and it works just the same as an unchipped machine, except you can burn your own backups.

If its ok I wanted to ask a couple of quetions related to this thread as I have got a Wii for my kids aswell its an early Xmas pressie and needs to be modded soon

    1) I read on a thread somewhere the likes of Super Maro Bos and some other games will need to be modified to work, do the newer chips run all backups staright up or is it hit and miss?

    2) Does it matter what firmware the wii is running? and when a game asks for a fw update to work will it prevent the chip from working?

    Thanks
    bub

1 - Newer chips run most games straight off - a few of the NTSC (Jap/USA) games need to use a loader via the homebrew channel to get them to run - the PAL games generally run straight away in my experience anyway

2 - It generally doesn't matter what firmware your Wii is at - mines at the latest (3.3e) and everything is working fine. BUT NEVER EVER EVER allow an NTSC disc to install an update on a PAL machine (or vice versa) - it will turn your Wii into a white plastic brick - currently no way to repair them if this happens.

If you download games use WiiBrickBlocker to patch the disc images so they won't even offer to upgrade the firmware

    just about right Northernbloke.

Its almost impossible to buy a chip for any wii thats not region free now, it was only the very very early mods that had issues with that. Theres still a lot of imports that wont work though. You can use a datal swap disk to play some, but this doesnt work if your wii has been updated tot he very latest firmware. You generally wont have a problem as release dates accross regions are pretty close toghether now days.

As long as you have the very latest PAL update on your wii you are safe to run import updates. if you have say v3.3 firmware on your wii and you put an import game in containing say the 3.1 update, it will want to update but it will only add the news and weather channels for america or japan and not do any serious damage. The problems start when the import game has an update thats newer than the one on your system.

just for info I couldn't get the datel region free to work for me - but Gecko Region Free 1.5 works fine from the homebrew channel
