Question cam slot on new TV

Hi All, I'm a long time user of Dbox2, recently bought new TV which has a CAM slot on it. I have no knowledge of CAMS & Cards &tc but I do have atech background, my question is - can this slot be used to replace the Dbox? I can see that I'd need programming kit &tc but what is the difference between various types of CAM?
    Many thanks in advance,

I read elsewhere some time ago that certain newer TV's have the capability of the tuner picking up dvb-c (As in cable through the VM network cable as input) channels with a cam/card slot but didn't really take much notice at the time as mine can't.

Not too sure of how much truth there was in it though, but sounded interesting.

actually, that makes me think I should just plug the cable feed into the RF input and see what happens, after all it reads the FTA digital channels, shouldn't it read the Cable FTA channels?

forgive me for straying off the original subject, but I think a light bulb has illuminated in the void behind my eyes.
    is this statement true:-
old style Terrestrial TV ( via aerial) = analogue transmission
Terrestrial DTV ( via aerial) = digital transmission
Cable TV ( n*L, VM &tc via cable) = analogue transmission
    Satellite TV ( S*Y &tc) = Digital transmission

hence the tuner in my new TV is happy to deal with Terrestrial DTV but considers Analogue Cable to be unreadable digits?

In my defence I can only re-iterate the quote (I wish I knew who said it) that the only stupid question is the one you don't ask

it will on some tv's i have done it. even the old dvdr's they sold in asda used to pick some channels up! from cable feed. nothing worth watching really but they can. and i doubt anyway that the tv would take a nagra cam cos thats what you would need. if i had a telly with a cam slot id try it myself cos i have nagra and a old on digi cam i used to have a seca cam too but thats in sumone elses top up tv box i think only ver 1.5 worked though?

thanks wizzard, that brings me back to my original question, you see I don't understand the issues when I read of Nagra or Seca and there is just Zero information about the uses for this slot in the user manual of the TV ( a 32" Samsung 6 series)

Its a cam slot for a top up tv cam m8.

Thats a Seca 3 cam if I recall correctly which hasnt been hacked.

It can also be used for a Setanta cam.

    more light bulbs!
so within the bandwidth allocated to a given TV channel on cable, it could be analogue OR digital,
i.e. the delivery service couldn't care less what it's delivering as long as it has a big enough truck!

sorry about the analogy .. ( but have I got it right now?)

To receive a cable signal you will need a cable tuner. You're TV has a digital freeview tuner in it and probably a standard UHF tuner too. Any cam used in the slot will only decrypt additional channels broadcast over digital freeview.

If you put the VM cable into the RF socket, using the UHF tuner, you will see some channels still broadcast (why I don;t know!).

A cable tuner picks up signals in a different range to UHF and freeview. You will not get these signals without an addition cable tuner. Like a DBox.

I have a few of the old ondigi cams, but were never able to use them to do anything useful.

It does make me wonder why VM haven't gone down the road of TV's with built in cable tuners tho...

I think if a freeview tuner (digital) was able to get cable signals, then you wouldn't be able to buy the different tuners for a dreambox. DVB- T, DVB-C and DVB-S.

Sony do a tv with cable tuner built in receives all cable channels just waiting for a nagra cam for the cam slot in the back of it.
