Info Using 360 as a media player?

I just got myself a 360 Premium with a 60Gb HDD. I've decided for now not to get it modd'ed as I'm eventually going to go on Live. I would however like to use the HDD to watch downloaded movies and TV.

My question is can you use the 360 to watch xvid or divX content? If so do I need to do anything to it first.

    Cheers

Yes you can use it to watch xvid, just stick em on a usb stick and plug it onto the usb port on your 360 and play them from there or a dvd, the machine may want to download the update to play them but that only takes seconds. You could also stream to your 360 using tversity which is pretty good. You can also use an external hard drive and play them from that but you'll need mac drive to format it which gets around the 4gb limit of fat or fat32 format.

I don't even have a DVD player anymore.

That only works with WMP10 and I think 9 but not with 11 as it's built in to WMP11, correct me if I'm wrong.

I used to use media center before MS implemented the divx code, however i just stream them directly from WMP11 nowadays.

I've just switched over to Tversity from a straight WMP stream. As Tversity seems to be able to handle a lot more codecs than WMP - even with a Klite plug in.

I used to use my 360 to play WMV-HD files off an external hard drive, and it was pretty good.....though not a patch on my Popcornhour media player playing the unconverted mkv's, so I dont use the 360 anymore for media.
