complete and utter newbie needs a bit of help

i am a complete and utter newb so i have a few questions to anyone willing to help me out.
i`ve got a chance to buy a xbox 360 arcade from the bro-in-law, 20gb hd already flashed and a few games for £50.
i know it`ll play games i can download but what i need to know is:
1. can i use this this like my old xbox, for playing .avi`s . i only use this as a media player.
2. if i can use it , can i up the hard drive with the 160gb already in the xbox1.
3. will the arcade be ok for going on live
4. can the red light thing be sorted if it crops up. i only ask this because i heard so much about the "3 red lights"
5. is this version not high def? if it isn`t is it worth getting? or should i wait and get a better version.

2; not sure, its a custom HD, but others will know
3; yes, you need to buy a subscription
4; yes, there's plenty here can help with that
5; dont think so, not on the older arcades, and if he's selling it for £50 Im guessing its an older one

and i think number 2 is a no

check it aint banned from xbox live though or you wont be able to get new arcade titles

as far as i know he`s never been on live , since he uses his ps3 for everything hence the reason hes selling.
