i think the orignal 60gb model did but to reduce the price of the ps3 they have removed the hardware that enables it to do it. i could be wrong though.

Yes this is true:
Launch models (60GB with 4 USB 2.0 ports, card readers and chrome trim) support PlayStation 2 format titles and SACD's.
40GB, 80GB & 160GB models do not support PlayStation 2 format titles and SACD's, but do support PSone titles.
*20GB models were only released in North America and Japan and lack Wi-Fi connections along with the other specs listed on launch 60GB models. PS1/PS2 software is not region free.
Other than that there is no real difference between the various PlayStation 3 models apart from HDD size and internal industrial specification such as CPU NM spec and power values.
