Xbox 360 Media Sharing with XBox360 and Media Player

I've got a fair few AVi XviD's on my PC in a folder located at L:/Movies

How do I go about getting these to display on my XBox 360 Media/Videos section?

The network is setup great though my router and it's playing the 'Sample Music' on my PC.

Do I need to update my XBox somehow? If so, how? It seems as though it only wants to see WMV files.

I'm a XBox virgin with loads to learn.

Would also like to ask if it's worth updating the FW on it.
If I saved the original firmware and changed it back if banned would it work again or is it the serial number of the system that gets banned?

    --EDIT--
I also have a 500GB external drive that doesnt seem to be getting recognised.

Go to http://tversity.com/ and install and away you go. Its pretty easy with this software however can be a bit troublesome without it.

I don't think so, you just install it on your PC and away you go. Browse your avi's and music etc from the 360 dashboard.

Done it. Needed to borrow my sons Memory Card to make a Gamertag and register with Live (Free). Downloaded somesort of update and presto. Sorted.

But, HD XviD's do not load. Is this due to a file size limit?

Don't you have to run Windows Media Player 11 in order for the Xbox to see the PC?

Not with TVersity, it acts as media player but will allow you to use other codecs.

Also that media update you downloaded will have to be available everytime you want to play that format. I have that problem where i would have to move my HDD from my flashed consol to my unflashed when I wanted to play MP4. Not my flashed console is banned, its not so much of a problem.

You can use WMP11 + Xbox for AVI's however there's such a wide range of codecs/audio streams available that the xbox sometimes struggles to play them.
Rap posted a thread on converting them to WAV files (I think), but tbh it's piss easy to install and use TVersity. TVersity seems to handle 99% of everything i throw at it, in whatever format I have it.

Ah I see now, you can also use windows media center which i prefer.

I can also get TVersity to stream 720p MKV files but sometimes it has to buffer which pisses me off when watching a film. I normally convert to MP4 but then you only get 2ch audio. I am now looking for an alternate solution (XBMC).

Just to add that I know you can use MP11 however as this was a bit of a noob question I thought it would be easier to just use tversity as its easier to use and is a bit more stable that using MP11

    Its all good though
