Newbie Sky and the phone line

Total noob question however, why do you need to have the Sky box attached to a phoneline?

Reason I ask is I only have one telephone socket in the house and when I put a dual socket into it (Broadband + Sky) It severly affects my broadband speed...

Will unplugging sky cause it to go off? not update? etc?

use a broadband filter and filter your sky box as a phone should fix it

Officially yes you do need it plugged in if you are the first year of your contract (or it's a multiroom box).

I had mine plugged in for about 2 months of my contract then we rearranged the living room putting the TV the other side of the room to the phone socket. I've now had sky around 4 years and never plugged it back in.

connected mine to activate sky+, then disconnected it and never had any problems.

Although as totally random says, a filter should sort your issue

Why do you need to connect it to activate Sky+?

For a new installation yes to allow callback...however the Sky+ activation will need a human phone call!

The dog chewed threw mine. Only issue I have is if I want to order something on ppv, which is the odd boxing event. Just ring up an do it over the phone instead.

Shit, I don't mean sky+, I mean the ability to set recodings remotely (via sky.com tv guide) - my bad...

I didnt have a phoneline connected at the time of install (had those plug extenders but they didnt work), the engineer activated the card via his PDA but to activate the remote record you had to go online via the box - hence needing the phoneline.

Didn't need a human call in my case
When I activated the SKY+ on my HD box I just phoned to get it done. This box has never had a phone cable plugged in. I don't know if things have changed but activation and pairing has never been done down the phone line (or at least the phone line plugged into the sky box).

Yeah u need to use the interactive services to do that so that needs a telephone line connected.

I've never connected my HD box and remote record all the time.

I did set it up on my old Sky+ box so probably only needs doing the once

Exactly....as you have registered your account via Sky interactive you dont need to do it on a new box.
