Xbox 360 best fix for 3 red lights?

just wondered what current thinking is with 3 red lights... x-clamp, xecuter rrod set or both? A mate;s box is fried so I have offered to have a go at fixing for him.

heres whats worked for the 9 that I have done:

xectuter rrod kit AND a dab of arctic silver on each pad

    all working fine

the dab of arctic silver is crucial, the pads on their own fail after a few hours

oh and when you power up for the first time after fitting them, remember to have it flat and leave it red light for an hour

switch off and back on and bobs ur uncle

    good luck

i did the X-clamp fix (thanks to evilsatan), and while it was open i used the RROD kit, again with a dab of thermal paste on each pad to make em stick, i see now what everyone ment, the pads DONT stick at all (at least not for me).

anyway gave the box to our kid and he uses it heavily, and its still goin strong today

so best bet m8 while its open, do both, and when doing the X-Clampp put NEW thermal paste on (artic silver 5 is best, but can be expensive) but not as much as a new box.

ive never seen an xclamp fix where you LEAVE the X clamps in place.

but it worked for him i guess, and the end result IS gettin it back on

I do the xclamp mod were u put the bolts thought the bottom of the case.

You use a 5mm drill bit and make the holes a little bigger then put the bolt thougth there as this keeps the whole board level at all times.

Also do the RROD kit at the same time put the little pads on the bottom of the graphics ram.

    Works well for me

I don't personally do the fix above this post but that makes a lot of sense. When I was pondering over the best way I was told the above was not neccessary.

I have never failed to repair a rrod console that has a problem with the RAM or overheating by using the Xecuter pads, Xclamp bolt fix and silver thermal paste. I was using antec thermal grease (all the local PC shop had) but one console would not work until I used a silver thermal paste so now that's all I use.

You should try the method i put about i had a console that would not come back alive witht the bolts just though the board so i put the thought the case and done it my way it works a charm i even left it on running for 2 days and then turned it off and wait and back on still running nice

    Hi guys,

If it's not the overheating problem what else can cause the RROD.?
