Default Laptop - broken power pin(??)

I have a Sony Vaio Slaptop. I bought it last Jan, its a great little machine.

Now not so long ago the laptop slipped off the couch and fell on to the power oin - teh adapter was in charging the laptop at the time and the power pin (female part) bent. The lappy worked fine afterwards, then died as the battery ran out. It wasnt getting any charge.

So the question is - is this fixable? Something i can do myself or will i need to get some "fixer" to sort it?

    Or is it borked forever?

    any help is great! Thanks

So the pin inside the laptop is bent? I had a laptop a couple of years ago where the power in unit inside the laptop had become loose and melted. I opened the laptop, desoldered the unit and soldered in a new one. Hopefully you can find the spare part and do that too?

Any ball park figures on soldering in a new power jack?

Reason is because a fella at work asked me to look at his - power jack on a dell felt too wobbly to me, but opened it up and solder joints were good. My soldering skills are shite so I gave it back to him, but will happily pass details on to him.

Would be happy to receive a reply in thread or pm.

Seriously mate when I did mine had had near enough no soldering experience whatsoever so you can do it. All in all cost less than a tenner for the replacement jack, soldering iron, and solder. If you still aren't confident then PM Rap

You can get the jacks for about £2 - £5

The cost is the labour on a DC jack repair.

We usually charge £90 + VAT but id do it for £40 + VAT for yourself

Whatever you need let me know

Yeh, the shop I used to work replaced power jacks for £45.

I know his prices are on the up however. However hopefully the mobo hasnt copped it.

    Raps VIP price sounds fair.

My old shop used to charge £100 as it's labour intensive as Rap says.. so what he's offering is a good deal.. only thing to watch for is that the Sony Vaios I've looked at have a different type of socket on the mother board than the usual laptop connectors.

If it was mine I would think about it. I wouldn't call myself competent in smt soldering so the most I would do is dab an iron on a dry joint.

Sounds very fair indeed, thanks for getting back to me. Will speak to fella, but I'm on holiday for next week so probably will be around 2-3 weeks until I know if he is interested.

The last few Vaio's i've done have had the DC socket on a cable, just unplug the cable and replace it. Easy peasy.

Probably ebay, you'll need to dismantle the laptop to identify the right socket. Take the top off the laptop, have a look inside, if it's on a cable just get a new one, if it's a solder job send it to rap.

Ok - i finally managed to get the laptop to pieces (loads of thanks to Welsh pete for his help!)

And the socket is actually on a cable. The cable has the following on the label.

    MS90 DC IN CABLE
    073-0001-2852_B
    FOXCONN 071025

I've hunted ebay but cant find anything - anyone know anywhere i can get a replacemnet?

Maybe try ebay on and off for a few days.

Alternatively give people, such as these fellas, a ring:

To see if they can sell you a part.

When I've had problems with finding one particular end of an AC supply adaptor, I usually cut it off (and the PSU side as well) and buy two mating ones from maplins and solder them on and insulate both.

Only thing to watch for is getting the polarity and amp rating right.

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on this - after a couple of hours fighting with teh laptop, breaking it into pieces, i finally have it sorted and fixed.

The lappy has a few war wounds now from where i was a tad overzealous with the screwdriver, but its working good as new now!

    Sweet! Thanks all!
