Default Posting hdd to europe - urgent

My brother in laws computer has crashed due to a powercut. As a result windows wont boot up past the first screen, obviously something has corrupted in the OS.

From experience, fucking about with the recovery console and restoring backed up hive / sam files is dangerous and can render part os the file system unaccessible, even by data revovery software.

What i have recommended he do is get a new hdd in there, install the OS (XP) and then access the old hdd to get to his data etc.

Anyhow, i basically need to get a hdd over to him (in Italy) asap.

Any recommendations on postage / couriers / etc ?

    appreciated

I've bought hdd's that have just come in an antistatic bag. Others have come in a foam lined box which would be ideal for this purpose.

Can he not just buy a hard drive in Italy today from their equivalent of PC World? They are only cheap so would probably be quicker and easier to do that. You could even find what he needs online and send him the link??

Yeah, hes in a small village that has one it person who charges the earth because all this stuff is akin to alchemy. I was gonna preinstall XP and talk him through plugging it in etc.

Ive got loads of the boxes with foam, and agree they're great for transport.

I would agree with Livesey, order one online from Italy as the prices are comparable to the UK e.g a 500GB Samsung SATA drive can be had for €55 (44 quid).

If you send it from the UK you risk it getting damaged in transit, then all the arsing about with insurance etc.. In addition you may have validation issues if you install XP on your computer and then try and transplant the HD into a second machine.

My advice, get him to source it locally and then send him up a foolproof (unattended) XP install DVD-ROM.

Just obtain a Ubuntu live cd and from there access your hdd and backup your files. Dont worry, it runs in your ram and doesnt touch your hdd, infact, its meant to be used if yours is broken!

I could be wrong, but me personally, I wouldn't touch any tweaked copies of xp. I tried experiementing with very minor tweaks, but every time I found strange problems with the windows installation further down the line. I suspect ms tie everything in with each other so any change cocks something up somewhere.

Best bet get an oem cd same make as his computer and write down what to click on each screen/talk him through it I reckon
