Default Stripping the laquer from my alloys.

The laquer on my alloys are quite badly chipped again. They are quite a wide dish and this is the second time in a year they are needing re-laquered. The water gets in these chips and discolours the wheels with brown blotches.

A mate at work reckons I'm better stripping off the laquer and leaving them bare but ensure I clean them on a regular basis with very fine wet and dry. He reckons I can strip the laquer of myself using nitromors!!!!

If I did strip the laquer off what would be the disadvantages and is it safe to do it myself with nitromors?

Sorry I don't know the exact answer to you question, but I've done budget wheel refurbs myself by sanding then painting and or laquering from a spray tin. Results have never been 100% perfect but by the time you get a little brake dust on them they look the same.

Without protection to the alloy, they will eventually oxidize and corrode with the air and the rim will not have the correct surface to hold the air against the bead of the tyre so your better off treating them properly.

Theres no easy way to this I'm afraid!

Personally, I would strip the wheels down (tyres-weights etc - if it's a split rim then split them too). Bead blast them and then get them painted and lacquered to your taste of colour.

Okay thanks guys. Is it okay to use nitromors to strip pff the remaining laquer from my wheels?

there is a very good substance called alibrite, superb stuff but its a acid. really does clean the wheels though

i have used nitromors on allows, nasty stuff but it works.

i think that the bare allow will oxidise quickly and look awful without a layer of laquer tbh.

do you have access to a spare that you dont mind testing it out on?

as said above the best is shot blast and then lacquer or powder coat...

I think I may have done a set of wheels with a mate using nitromors. If I'm correct, you want to wear gloves as it irritates your skin after being on it for a while.

if you do use nitromors a little tip is to have a bucket of water near you in case you get a bit on your hands, dip your hand straight in the water as the water stops the reaction straight away, do wear glasses though

Thanks for the advice. Don't have a spare mate considering almost £500 a wheel!!! A guy at a shop today reckons I'm better getting them blasted and then painted or powder coated but I'm unsure. Which do you think is best, painted or powder coated?

well the preparation is the most important, especially if you are powder coating as this is in two stages, firstly spraying the piece that is electrically charged, and then baking in an oven.

the current trend is to powder coat, i have a set of rims that were powder coated and they look great. im have heard that powder coating is prone to chipping but i personally havent experienced this.

paint on the other hand is cheaper but prone to flaking.

personally id go down the powder coat route, but id want to be sure it wasnt cowboys doing it, and that they were doing the whole rim, not just the face and external edge.

My old man had a set of wheels powercoated in a place in Hillington mate, they took the bare wheel and done the lot for £25 a wheel... they done a brilliant job too and they stayed solid.

I change wheels too often to have mines refurbed.

    Thanks Chris,

If you get a minute can you ask your dad the name of the place in Hillington please?

new boy so hold onto your hats!

been involved with cars for a long time and had various refurbs done so my comments may be of interest?

with all finishes the preparation is the critical 'thing'

standards vary so much thats its impossible so say 'x' is better than 'y'

    but a few pointers?

powder coating is good but if you get any damage in the coating water gets underneath and lifts the finish - plus if your centre caps are plastic they cannot be powder coated as they would 'melt' in the oven

painting is fine - just choose a colour that Halfords do as a touch up stick so you can repair scratches etc - Ford Moondust Silver being popular

BUT- if you have decent wheels - send them to Pristine Wheels for full refurb - not cheap but they will come back better than the brand new wheels

there is a reason Porsche/Ferrari etc use them!

'cheap' wheel places cannot do/correct diamond cut finishes - Pristine can - very few others in the UK offer this service

and no i do not work for them nor have any 'relationship' apart from being a very satisfied customer with receipts proving i paid for the work!!
