    Help How much to fix??

Right, I got into a bit of a smash with my Evo V today on the way to work, no-one else involved, just me and a fence post with a bit of barbed wire.

What happened: I was going about 20 MPH behind a 4x4 when the car infront of the 4x4 started to slow down, I put the brakes, on they did nothing, ABS light came on, I turned to avoid the car infront and hit a post at about 15/20 MPH!

****ING GUTTED! Insurance have said it will cost me £350 excess, I will loose my 1 years no claims and my premium will go up by approx 21 days worth of cover when I renew next year (total loss is £500ish and 1 years no-claims).

The good note is that I can get Mitsu to fix it for me if I wish, so I know it will be top notch work.

The other option I have (not went through with the claim yet) is to get the parts myself and get them fitted & painted by guys I know.

    I know for a fact I need....

    • Replacement Evo 6 Front Bumper
    • Replacement Intercooler
    • Replacment Mesh for the Front End
    • Replacement Passenger Side Front Wing
    • Replacment Passenger Side Front Indicator
    • Fitting of the Parts
    • Getting the New Bumper & Wing Re-sprayed

Anythin else I might have missed? The post was about as high as my waist and half of it was under the car, any other damage that might have been caused??

Also, how much do you think it will cost for all the parts plus other damage that may have been caused?

    Cheers!

You should blank your reg plate.

Looks quite superficial but will no doubt cost a fortune check the chassis legs not bent as well as can occur easily after a bump which will cost you.

    Ouchville.

It's definately gonna cost you more than £500 to repair it properly from the looks of it mate. I don't know what 1 years no claims gonna cost ya but even if you "cocked it up" I still dont see you getting much change from £500.

Im sure Urbsy will be along some time shorlty to give you his expert advice.

No idea on cost I'm afraid, but OUCH!

Have you only had that a few days too, gutted?!

In my absolutely none expert opinion, it looks like it would be cheaper to go through the insurance if you want a perfect job, but if you just want it to look OK to most people, you could source S/H parts and get it sorted yourself.

Yes mate, only got the fucking thing on Saturday!! Insureance may well be the best option, because I want it done perfectly, not cheaply.

Like I said, going through insurance will cost me £350 excess + my premium will go up by about £150 next year, so thats £500 to get it done perfectly.

Only prob is that some stuff (such as front bumper) will have to come from Japan and it will take about 2 months to arrive!!

Work has told me to take the day off after telling them what happened.

Gutted mate. I'd get it on the MLR as there are normally cars that people are breaking and get it priced up. As you've only got one years no claims i'd be tempted to get it done on the insurance and get it done right. Intercoolers aint cheap either.

And then i'd look at your tires as maybe they caused it? In Japan they have Summer tires and Winter tires and i suspect you are rolling around on Summer tires which is why you had no grip?? My Lancer has Yokohama's on it and they are fine most of the time butt he first time it snowed I went straight into a kerb and I thought I was the drift king when it came to driving on the snow lol

Checked on the Yokohama website and it says summer tires only and should not be used on snow! I'm amazed its legal to sell a car in the UK with those tires TBH.

I think my first question would be "Why did the brakes fail to operate?" because ABS failure does NOT affect stopping power in any way, shape or form.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

Yup, insureance seems the way to go. Found a genuine Mitsu Evo V intercooler on Ebay and the price of £250 delivered!!!

Brakes worked, ABS worked (I could feel it), tyres had zero grip. The road was sheet ice, even a tractor was spinning its's wheels!

Yea mate, woke up to about 2 inches of snow, and that road I slid on has about an inch of solid ice on it! Like I said, even the tractor was spinning it's wheels.

Gonna to to Mitsu in a min and get a quote for the repair, although an intercooler from them is £850 alone, so it will be MUCH, MUCH cheaper going through insurance!

Just hope they dont write the thing off. If Mitsu say too high a figure then I'll take it to the insurance companies recommended garage (Arnold Clark).

Can you not take it to a specialist? I'm not sure if i'd want the local numpties at Arnold Clark work on a car like that?

Just read the thead on the MLR and if there are questions about the mods being declared then it might be better to source the parts yourself? Could be a good time to start tuning it

Everything is declared to my insureance.

Only thing is that I want the same front bumper (Evo 6) and not 100% sure if that will be covered or if I will just get an Evo 5 one.

The guy I know at Mitsu said they will be able to get me the same front end I already have and that they are all about the same price.

Taking it into Mitsu bodyshop today to get an estimate, the guy said it will cost £850 for the intercooler alone!! So defo cheaper to get Mitsu to do it.

Dont really know any other specialists that can do it if Mitsu say it will cost silly money.

Will find out this afternoon, taking it in at 1:30pm to get checked and given an estimate.

I'm just praying to god it's not gonna be written off!!

Blimey, I was in Fife at the weekend and it was just raining hard as usual and lots of wind, sorry to hear about your motor, From looking at the damage, I'd say about £3000 to repair, the bumper unpainted is £650 (Although the insurance company will probably only fit the original EVO 5 one....- Paint is about £200 on top, then add the vat, intercooler, wing and paint etc.....

Can I ask what you paid for it and how much mileage is on the car ?

Paid £7,985 with a Mileage of just 47,500 when I got it!

I told the insureance the car cost me £8,000 if the repair is £3,000 do you think it will be a write-off, or will it get repaired?

EDIT: According to my insurance comapany....

    What is a total loss?

If the cost of repairs exceed the market value of your car then it is likely we will consider it to be beyond economic repair. This is often referred to as a total loss.
So as long as the repair is less than market value it should get repaired.

Herman, I wouldn't worry too much about them writing it off. I have a Celica GT worth about £2500 and got £2000 wing replacement recently when someone drove into it while parked.

Gutted mate, at least you'll have a brand new looking front end and a new intercooler in 3 weeks so its not too bad. Can you get a hire car from your insurance whilst its off the road?

    £2000-£3000????? Jeez.
    At least you're OK.
2-3 weeks, plus time to fix. You'll be in a 1.1 Fiesta or some other such courtesy car, what a come down!
