Default Loft insulation what can I do? or not do?

This is a shot of our roof from the inside, I noticed today with the snow that the snow on it melted pretty quick compared to those houses arround. The floor is boarded and has the fibre wool stuff between the floor and ceiling of the bedrooms. but under the roof it is just the black felt stuff and then slates on top. I was thinking sticking somthing up in the space between the wood bits and then putting plaster board over it. I don't want to be messing with the fiber stuff that makes you itch so what else is available and are there and rules that I need to stick to gaps for breathing anywhere?

The pipe is just the extractor fan for the bathroom but the central heating boiler also has a vhimney going up through the roof also so is there anything that I need to do with that in mind?

u might need to beef them up a bit by 2" or so then u need to get some 150mm insulation and put it in between the joist next polythene (to act as a vapor barrier) and do a good overlap staple it to the joist the plasterboard. be careful not to let the insulation touch the felt/roof as u need an air gap

    Very handy reply there.
Even with all the windows closed, as soon as the central heating is turned off, the house gets cold very very quickly.
Not sure if doing the above would help me though...

The space is used ofor storage and was done about 24 years ago so I am sure everything is no longer within building regs and as a DIY job Im not arsed if it still isnt within regs.

My thoughts are to get some 50-60mm foam board type insulation and put it in the gaps, maybe with some of the foil bubble wrap type stuff, buy some sort of stuff to be a vapor barrier is plastic sheeting ok or is it some special material? I hope it isnt gortex, then again we have enough gortex coats and trousers here we could sew all the bits together and it would cover the roof.

So takeing the measurement to be 100mm in the joist's there must be a gap between the felt and the insulation so 40mm should be enough. shouldn't it?
    No gaps at the edges.

Now the center of the house bit is easy but the sides of the room front and back of the house are boarded and the felt is bare just like the rest the floor is not boarded so the existing what I think is 100mm is visible can the same be done or would I be ok to get the rock wool stuff and just lay it over the top of the existing insulation leaveing the gaps at the corner where the roof meets the wall or should I do the bit up near the felt also ITs just going to be a ball ache to get in those bits. I hate small spaces for working especially witht eh itchy shit that is there.

There is also a gap in the floor which was removed when the old water tank leaked whihc I hope to sort out too. The main problem we have is the hole getting the stuff in is the tiny thing that is usual loft access and there is a wardrobe under it it isnt the easiest of places to access.

just make sure there is a space between the roof and the insulation. then the vapor barrier start at the top and work ur way down so if any water runs it will run down and not leak into the room. the foil bubble wrap is spot on also m8

i think little john wanted to insulate the rafters cause his florr is boarded and didnt want the trouble of lifting them, or might use the space so he wants to keep some heat in it !

I havn't done anything up there yet, and yes the reason for insulating the rafters is to keep as much heat in as possible which as a result will make the house warmer in general resulting in heatng bills being reduced.

bbshark, what type of stuff is it you have? the foam type boards or the rock wool stuff? I am looking at useing both, the rock wool adding an extra layer at the edges that the floor isnt boarded then the foam sheets between the rafters. I am very interested.

I will. I have managed to get a few rolls up in the loft but am itching like a bugger now on my hands and arms. Im gonna get a paper suit thing for when I unroll them.

I got home and my dad turns round and said did you get any for his freind I told him no as he never said he wanted some. The driver of the 306 said it wasnt the best drive he has ever done with 5 rolls in the back and I get the wonderfull job of cleaning out the dump that is the corsa over the weekend as it got a bit of dirt in the boot.

If you find that by the time it is being disposed of and you still have some let me know Andy's dad said and extra layer would be good in his loft. we got some strange looks on the way home with 4 cars full of the stuff.
