Tight cnuts, spend sum money on a decent tree
It may look like a Christmas tree at the end of the festive season but this sad offering has only just gone up.
The £200 centrepiece of a town’s £6,000 decorations was unveiled by former Atomic Kitten star Natasha Hamilton.
But it has been fenced off with a “Caution Under Repair” sign after locals, complained about the state of it. Councillor Joan Maslin said: “It really is pathetic, a disgrace. I would describe it as looking like an overgrown twig.
“That’s how it should look after Christmas when you throw it in a skip, not before.
“In the current financial climate people need cheering up and this is the last thing we need. It’s an insult.”
A hundred businesses in Peterlee, Co Durham, forked out £3,000 for the switch on with shopping centre owners Kenmore Capital Glenrothes paying the rest. Centre manager Mike Weston said: “I am disappointed with the tree. We got it delivered early this year and it is not up to standard.
“But the local councillor has a cheek to complain. The council has not contributed a penny towards the Christmas decorations.” He wants Easington district council to pay half to replace it. It is investigating.
